Just today the History Channel had a story on the draft riot of 1863 in NYC. Turned into anti black riots. Black homes were torched and 12 free blacks were lynched.
Federal troops had to restore order.

The death toll was actually over 500, and could have been as high as 1,000. Union army troops entering NYC to restore order announced that anyone on the streets would be shot. See www.republicanbasics.com.

Exactly. I am glad that I had a good teacher (he is liberal, btw) for my AP American History class. The textbook mentioned this and he pounded especially hard upon it. He also noted how Lincoln switched strategies from saving the Union to abolishing slavery in the middle of the war, making the war hardly an anti-slavery crusade in reality.
