It was the evening of Sept. 11, and waves of war had begun to crash upon the American shore.

In the White House, the president was addressing an anxious nation. His purpose was twofold: to begin preparing the American public for the impending fight and to warn America's enemies that further aggression would not be tolerated.

"And the protestors against the war in Vietnam were wrong, too."

Correct: they should have started earlier.

As long as we're making comparisons, check out Alistair Cooke's article discussing the 1938 appeasers (Neville Chamberlain's "peace in our time") and today's.

The Vietnam War protestors should have been jailed along with Jane Fonda and all the rest. Then they should have been tried for treason. The draft dodgers, including Bill Clinton, should have been hunted down like the vermin they are and put in the cell next to Jane.

I briefly scanned these articles. They look like welcome reading to someone who, while not a veteran, has undying respect and admiration for those who fought and died defending our freedom.

I have no patience or time for anyone who discounts the efforts made by those who had the courage to stand up and defend this country.

My God, that's the most un-American statement I've read in a long time. What you're saying, ultimately, is that American citizens who dare to protest against their government's actions -- especially acts of war -- should be thrown in jail. That's despicable, and something I would expect to hear coming out of Saddam Hussein's mouth.

Obviously arguing with the likes of you is a waste of time, since you consider the Constitution to be nothing but toilet paper for you to smear your despicable, un-American ideas on.

Just like everything else about the left, these protests are a big lie. They not anti-war as much as they are anti-Bush and anti-Republican. The truth lies in the fact that we didn't hear hardly a peep out of them when clinton was bombing to wag the dog and change the subject.

The ones among us who are the most vocal about Constitutional rights are those self-satisfied few who are willing to let others pay the bill for freedom. It has always been this way.

Once again, the heavy lifting will be done by those with backbone.

Freedom Is Not Free

"The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive veterans of early wars were treated and appreciated by our nation." - George Washington

Spoken like a true totalitarian...

Shall we define our terms, MG?

totalitarian: Of, relating to, being, or imposing a form of government in which the political authority exercises absolute and centralized control over all aspects of life, the individual is subordinated to the state, and opposing political and cultural expression is suppressed: “A totalitarian regime crushes all autonomous institutions in its drive to seize the human soul” (Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.).

freedom: The condition of being free of restraints. Liberty of the person from slavery, detention, or oppression. Political independence. Exemption from the arbitrary exercise of authority in the performance of a specific action; civil liberty: freedom of assembly. Exemption from an unpleasant or onerous condition: freedom from want. The capacity to exercise choice; free will: Frankness or boldness; lack of modesty or reserve: the new freedom in movies and novels. The right to unrestricted use; full access: was given the freedom of their research facilities. The right of enjoying all of the privileges of membership or citizenship: the freedom of the city.

I fully appreciate, honor and respect the freedom that allows us to engage in this forum. Measure the worth of your rebelliousness against the sacrifice of this country's forefathers who shed their blood for this republic. I love freedom, and despise the totalitarianism that is filling the world today. However, freedom without boundaries (even in speech) quickly turns to anarchy.

You say you love freedom, but when your fellow citizens actually engage in freedom, as the Vietnam war protesters did, you despise them and call them "vermin" who should be hunted down and thrown in jail. Since you have access to a dictionary, I suggest you research the word, "Hypocrisy."

...I suggest you research the word, "Hypocrisy."

hy·poc·ri·sy: The practice of professing beliefs, feelings, or virtues that one does not hold or possess.

I never said the anti-war crowd should not have the courage of their convictions, or be denied the right to express their beliefs. However, any government, even a democratic republic, must place certain limits on the rights of its citizenry or chaos ensues. In the case of war, I believe the right of any citizen to protest the government's pursuit of armed conflict should cease once the fighting has begun.

Yes, I referred to Vietnam War protesters as "vermin", and unabashedly stand by that characterization.

Thank God these brave and principled Americans, whom you despicably refer to as "vermin," protested that illegal and unjustified war. They saved countless American and Vietnamese lives by helping to end that terrible, stupid conflict.

You can subscribe to the unthinking rule of "My county, right or wrong" like a good nazi, but I and other true lovers of freedom will love country when it's right or wrong, support is when it's right, and correct it when it's wrong.

I have nothing further to say to you.
