Union membership last year took its biggest drop since 1995, as companies in union-heavy sectors struggled to cut costs and boost productivity by operating with fewer workers.
The number of U.S. union members fell 1.7% in 2002 to about 16.1 million, or 13.2% of the work force, the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics said. In 2001, unions represented 16.4 million American workers, or 13.4% of the total.

Yes, government union membership outnumbers that in manufacturing by almost 3:1.
And union labor constitutes only 15% of the workforce in the manufacturing sector.
Yet globalist "free" traders will continue their quest to destroy our industrial infrastructure, and jeopardize our National Security, by hystericly hyping the antiquated paradigm that "it's all the UNION's fault."
I was an Assistant Busisess Agent in the IBEW during the transition from the Meany era to the Sweeny era. My family is Republican and active in the Labor Movement since the 1870's. The socalists drove me out and drove a good friend, labor lawyer, out. Unions have destroyed as many jobs as they have protected.
Communism presents itself as "the workers party".
Quite a coincidence, wouldn't you say?
