Mr. Rogers has died...

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- Television host Fred Rogers, better known simply as "Mister Rogers," died Thursday after a brief battle with stomach cancer, according to a spokeswoman for his production company.

Rogers, 74, died at his home in Pittsburgh. He is survived by his wife Joanne Rogers, their two sons and two grandsons, according to his Web site.

I have it on good authority that King Friday the 13th has declared at least a week of mourning.

A not-as-beautiful day in the neighborhood. The kindest man in the mass media, and enough generosity of spirit to personally justify -- almost -- tax-funded "public" television. Rest in peace, Fred.

Fred Rogers was indeed a good man. My Sunday School class had the pleasure of meeing him way back in 1974 - quite an experience for a small child. I am sure he is being welcomed home to God's neighborhood.

The people I know who have met Fred Rogers said he was the same man in person as he was on the screen; genuine and kind.

There was a story about his car being stolen from the parking lot of the Children's Television Workshop. There were several scripts for the show in the backseat when it was stolen. Apparently, the thief found these and felt incredibly guilty, because the car was returned a few days later, unharmed, to the very same parking spot with a note, "I didn't know it was yours"!

He was a wonderful witness for the Lord and a wonderful neighbor to us all, rest in peace, Mr. Rogers.
