This is some scary stuff. If you're at all interested in anything akin to privacy and you use Goolge regularly, this is a must-read:

Google and TIVO, the greatest inventions since sliced bread. I love 'em both.

Google is your friend. That they have more powerful tools is neither good nor bad. It's what they do with those tools that matters. I do not wish safety on the web by emasculating all servers to the point of impotence. Just as I do not wish safety in this world by emasculating the U.S.Military to the point that it can do no harm.
Google is providing an immensely useful service to the world -- one that dramatically increases the power and usefulness of the web to all its users.
Show me where they are misusing that power, as opposed to showing me where they have power to misuse, and then I will start worrying.

Oh great. I use Google about a dozen times a day, often to track down commie pages so I know what the SOBs are saying. Yay....

The toolbar is gone.
I'll think about the cookie. But I'll need a suitable alternative.

Turn off the advanced crap. It does not do much anyway.
Mine is off and there is nobody phoning home.

I got rid of my Alexa bar many years ago because it made problems. So far I haven't had any problems with the Google bar. I have turned off the advanced features, because I don't normally care about page rank & such.
Google really works seamlessly. I'm paranoid about spyware that screws up my computer, but so far Google doesn't seem to be objectionable, IMHO.
These gadgets often have a habit of changing, as their makers try to figure out some way to make more money off of you. If that happens, I'll remove the Google bar actually 1/4 bar, since I stick it on the end of my address bar).

WOW! A long list of statements, most of which have zero meaning once you get past the scare langauage, and none of them have any proof to back them up.
Grade-A, Debka-style, GARBAGE.

Boo!
Did I scare ya?
A cookie on my computer you say? Horrors! And it contains a number! I've got a name, I've got a number, I've got a line on you.
If all google wants from me in exchange for the awesome search facilities they give it to know what I am searching for, that sounds like a wonderful deal that I would make any day of the week and twice on Tuesdays.

Always good to get any information. I must carefully go over the link though. Never one to quickly scoff at anything before evaluation. Now the good things of Google. Put my old moniker up there and laughed at the illustrious or well qualified namesakes. This included an actor who had about twenty entries and only appeared on ONE real film, Sophia Loren was the star. Also an astronomer yet.
I put the area where I had served in Egypt with the British Army and my name. Surprise, surprise, my entry in an old comrades website came up. Absolute joy- (affected lower middleclass dignity here). Said with that accent. I am actually a person in the great out there.
Actually put the name of an abandoned old mill in England, I found as a kid on a bycycle in 1949. Long ,long erased from time and memory. Yep, not much about it, but it was there- The Troy Mill.
