Departure of the USS Nimitz
Vanity | March 3, 20034 | p. henry

Posted on 03/03/2003 10:00:04 AM PST by p. henry

My firm's offices overlook San Diego Bay. As I write this post, the USS Nimitz and its crew of 5500 sailors and airmen is rounding North Island and heading for the Gulf. A prayer or two would probably be in order.

I escorted this baby on two med cruises, once to the N. Atlantic and once to the S. Atlantic. Those were the days!

Fox News is covering it live between other news stories. An incredibly moving sight. I pray for safety, protection, comfort, and wisdom for each and every one.

I watched on TV.I thought of a happy homecoming when I stood on a dock in San Diego waiting for my husband who had been gone for six months and prayed the men and women on the Nimitz returned safely too. God speed.

My stepson's on the USS Princeton, part of the Nimitz battle group. Spoke to him on the phone for a bit this morning before they shipped out. He's in very good spirits, looking forward to seeing the couple of ports they'll be stopping in along the way. He hasn't started a family yet, so he didn't have any tearful farewells. Of course, my wife is concerned for his safety, but as I tell her, he's surrounded by the strongest military force in the world. At this point, he's safer than we are.

I watch every face when our troops are shown on TV and pray for their safe return. No matter what the degree of danger I am indebted to anyone who volunteers to serve.

My wife and I traveled to San Diego a couple of weeks ago.  Here is a photo I took of the Nimitz docked at the Coronado Naval Base.

they used to let you sail right up alongside the carriers parked there in that turning basin; since 9/11, however, I'm a little reluctant to try so close ever again ;)

:) Smart guy. I'd like to think they are that security concious. Who knows? My arse wouldn't be the one testing this theory. I'm with you.

It was a cool sight to see, wasn't it? I went outside during break from class this morning up in the hills in Old Town to watch the Nimitz leave. I wish I could have gone to the harbor to watch it leave.

"I don't see much reason for people to get all teary-eyed over the departure of the Nimitz"

Speak for yourself. One of my life-long friends was a fighter pilot on the Nimitz during the first Gulf war. We worried about him constantly.
