Oh, man! This family has to make an awful choice. They made a selfless choice, and I pray that somehow it will all turn out well.

Man, that's tough. I hope that his wife will be understanding if they lose the boy and he's not there to help her though it. Good marriages can be lost on less, best intentions of both parties notwithstanding.
On the other hand, I'm sure that Marine could not forgive himself if he traded the job where he could save lives (as batallion XO) for the job where he could only watch and hope (dad of a sick boy), and his unit took casualties.

God bless him and his little baby.

Offered a desk job at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, the 13-year veteran opted to go with the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion to an undisclosed location in the Middle East. God Bless you Sir, we will pray for your safe return and the health of your son.

you know, i could not do this. i would have to stay. i have two small boys and dread the thought of losing them. i understand the major's commitment and pray GOd's blessings on him. something tells me that little boy is going to get his new heart.

It doesn't say anything about it in the article, but I wonder if perhaps this Marine didn't leave his son's life to God, having faith that if he did his duty, and let God's will be done, all things would work together for ultimate good.

The Marine Major in the story is a buddy of mine... Hal and I met back in 1984 at ISU goin' thru NROTC... we went thru OCS, and TBS together, we've been stationed together, we've drank beaucoup beer together, bled, sweat, laughed and cried together...
Hal is a man of character, I'd share a fightin' hole with him anyday... this has been hell on him, but he feels strongly about his duty to his Marines... Semper Fi friend...
Dillon has been in our prayers since October, along with his whole family. Please join me in lifting them up...
I have his deployed snail mail address, let me know if you want it...
