Face surgery for cyclist after freak roo mishap

07mar03

A ROCKHAMPTON cyclist will undergo extensive facial reconstruction after a kangaroo ricocheted off a car and struck him.

Earl Teichmann was riding with a group of nine cyclists on Wednesday night when the roo bounced off the car, which was travelling at 100km/h, and across the road into the cyclists, striking Mr Teichmann.

The impact snapped the 36-year-old cyclist's bike frame and he fell face first on to the bitumen.

He sustained multiple fractures to the bones in his face, a broken jaw, a broken nose, a gash above his left eye and one corner of his lip was torn to his chin. The kangaroo died on impact.

The young male driver of the Corolla and his female passenger were not injured.

Mr Teichmann's wife, Connie, 34, yesterday drove to Brisbane to meet her husband at the hospital.

"Earl will be back on the bike once the doctors say he's able to," she said.

Cycling Queensland Rockhampton organiser Ian Jennings described the incident as a freak accident.

Isn't it weird they give his wife's age? Is it just so we know some old lady isn't going to be taking care of him, or some teeny-bopper who would get bored and resentful with an invalid in the house? Or are they both suspects or something?

How would you like to have to explain missing work with this story?
