What did they say. If you are going to start a thread like this you better come up with something better than "in regards to.."

Come on now. If they said something put it out there before I have to break my wife's heart telling her the dixie chicks are on the banned list.

You really have to wonder about the intelligence of these entertainers. Given the polls are 60+% in favor of our Iraq actions; instead of keeping quiet, they chose to alienate over half of their customer base. The smart thing would be to have no public comment (vote, donate, do whatever you wish, but don't involve the business).

The Dixie Chicks

Shepherd's Bush Empire, London

Betty Clarke
Wednesday March 12, 2003
The Guardian

The Dixie Chicks are the good-time girls the country establishment loves to hate. Too direct, too old-fashioned, too modern ... you name it, it's been slung at the Texan trio. The old vanguard liked their women fiesty but second-class, preferably wearing cowgirl outfits and a smile. But the Dixie Chicks were renegade ladies of country who sung gleefully about killing abusive spouses and dressed like an older Britney Spears. Add the success they have had selling a progressive bluegrass sound to fans ignorant of banjos and whistles and you have an emasculating threat.
And they don't know when to stop. "Just so you know," says singer Natalie Maines, "we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas." It gets the audience cheering - at a time when country stars are rushing to release pro-war anthems, this is practically punk rock.

Aside from courting controversy, the band has sold 25m LPs since their debut album, Wide Open Spaces, was released in 1998 and made the fiddle sexy. Featuring two sisters, Martie Maguire and Emily Robinson, along with the effervescent Maines, their passion for tradition and love for pop made the country genre a contender again. Their latest album, Home, won three Grammys.

Although their outfits are more New York than Nashville, the music is proud of its roots. Long Time Gone adopts the chatty style of Loretta Lynn and the poignancy of Hank Williams, Robinson's nifty banjo flowing beneath Maguire's sparky fiddle. Tortured, Tangled Hearts is similarly quick and quaint, Maines recalling Dolly Parton before she became Country Barbie.

Bluegrass's charm lies in its rawness, but the Dixie Chicks have polished the mountain sound and made it palatable for a new audience. This does mean that Truth No.2 creeps into Celine Dion territory, Maines grabbing each phrase and shaking her head like a puppy with a toy. But it's in the giddy Sin Wagon, which turns religious worship into a hymn for sex, that the Dixie Chicks hit their stride, shrieking, shouting, unrepentant.

I have a real problem with this 60% figure. Nearly everyone I've talked to in my circle of influence/knowledge is ambivalent at best (meaning they are undecided) or adamantly against the war.

For the record, I want Saddam Hussein removed.

Thanks for posting the comments. I wonder if there were more than that.

I'll say it again. Thinking the war with (not "on" Iraq like we are raping Iraq or something) is not necessary because Saddam can be contained is naive but not unamerican.

Bashing the President because you hate his guts when he's trying to protect the nation from a threat makes you a loser who puts your political views ahead of the Country.

Saying you have to get the UN's approval to protect our country is UN-American.

The Dixie Chicks are losers until I hear they want the UN's approval then their UN-American losers.

The remarks that have been quoted are anti-Bush. President Bush still enjoys popularity in the 60s, I think. From that viewpoint, the girl wasn't very bright to blast him in such a personal manner.

Remember that "everyone I've talked to in my circle of influence/knowledge" does not comprise a demographically representative sample. That is, you know folks in your own geographic area, in your own field, mostly people who are close enough to you to talk about an upsetting subject that most people are scrupulously avoiding. The polls are done in such a way that they represent the views of people all over the country, from every educational, socio-economic, cultural, age, and gender group, so they are more representative.

I mean, for the record, everyone I know despises Bush and worships Clinton. But that's just because I live in an incredibly left-wing area. Doesn't mean the rest of the country feels the same way as my acquaintances do.

They also talked smack against Toby Keiths "Angry American". Basically saying that it highlighted the ignorance and reflected the worst of country music and its fans. That was in November of '02 or so. Ever since, I have dropped off of their list of fans. I have not or will not buy their music. Go Toby, Clint, Charlie and all others that have real American pride.

Face it, holanet: the Chicks messed up, and now they'll pay the financial price.

I just bought it, and I am now looking for the mailing address so I can send it back to them.

I can't decide whether to send it to Columbia Records, or to Sony Music, the parent company. Either way, it will be addressed to the CEO.
