California will pay an estimated $1 million to set up a program expected to keep one sexually violent predator fed, clothed, housed, counseled and watched over in San Jose for the next year.

Most of the money will go to Pennsylvania-based Liberty Healthcare, which recently won a no-bid contract to create a supervised-release operation for California's sexually violent predator program. But at least at first, Liberty will have just one client: convicted child molester Brian De- Vries, who will soon be moved from Atascadero State Hospital to an as yet undisclosed San Jose location.

This same program is in effect to watch over firebugs during the summer. Millions are spent annually on private contractors to keep a 24/7 vigil on a handful of known arsonists. This program is the major factor in the almost spetactular success rate in the arrest and conviction of these arsonists. The cost of fighting wildfires is so high that the cost is justified.

Surreal. California, like other states, is screaming that they have no money. Here's a good example of why.

They hope to eventually reduce costs to $180,000 per day per prisoner? The lunatics really are running the asylums.

Anyone who wants can drop by my house, and watch for a considerably reduced rate. About $10,000 per year per watcher seems fair. Quite a bargain, when you think about it.

Of course, you won't see much sex, let alone any offensive sex, but the price is still a bargain...
