French Stance Cutting Brit's Opposition to War

France's opposition to a war with Iraq under any circumstances may be responsible for a sudden shift in public opinion in Britain, according to the Britain's Sunday Times newspaper. A new poll reveals that the number of Britons opposed to the war has dropped by 13 percent in the last two months. In January, fully 73 percent of Brits were opposed to a war with Iraq. That figure has now fallen to 60 percent according to the YouGov survey published in the Sunday Times.

Reuters reported that the poll showed that while 49 percent of Brits said a war without a second UN resolution would be against their will, with another resolution, a whopping 76 percent would support military action.

The poll also showed that Britons are unhappy with France and its threat to block a second U.N. resolution. The YouGov survey said 70 percent believed France was wrong to take that stance, while only 22 percent supported it, leading the paper to speculate that the French opposition has sparked resentment among some Britons, causing the drop in anti-war sentiment.

If anyone watched Meet the Press this morning and saw the vice-President rail off about seven different occasions from '92-200 in which the french vetoed resolutions against Iraq and its' WMD the number of pro-war/anti-french sentiment would triple!

The university I teach for runs various alumni tours around the world, as do many others, I suppose. The France trip did not get its quota for this year, and alums canvassed for interest in the trip sent the materials back with suitable comments about the French and why they wouldn't consider signing up for the trip. The French really will be feeling the effects of their treachery, as you say.

What do you think of this article, Ivan? I know Brits almost reflexively will rally to oppose the French but this almost seems to overstate the case a bit?

The British polls always showed a majority in favour of going to war with a second UN resolution. What has occured is that Chirac has made it clear that a second UN resolution simply cannot occur, and for no good reason, ergo, support for war without one is rising. We all know Saddam is a bad man and needs to die.
