At present the thinking is that it requires more contact than airborne.
If no one in the aircraft becomes infected, other than those who touched or assisted the doctor, then we have one range.
If those within a row become infected then we can think sneeze
or cough.
If many of the other passangers who had no contact become infected then - the game is over....

Is this your area of expertise?

Remember that he started his trip well before the WHO alert, and pneumonia is normally not very contagious. If you are seriously claiming that Doctors should not travel after treating a seriously ill patient, you might as well place them all under house arrest.

Your complaints on "free healthcare" do not apply. The Sinaporean doctor attempted to return to his home country for treatment. Perhaps you can blast the Germans for putting him into quarintine there rather than sending him on to Singapore, but we already know they have socialized medicine.

I am slightly stressing out about this... I made sure my mother was informed about this. She works for company that has sold out to China, they are closing the place down in about 20 months... her work place has been swarming with Chinese people. Here is an email I got from her today... I am stressing that possibly her boss may come back with this crap as he left for China on Saturday. I am not sure when he is due back. I know the chances are slim she would catch it, but I think she should seek medical attention right away if she feverish anytime in the future. She is 63 years old...
My boss left Saturday around 7:00 AM. At the time he left he probably hadn't even heard of this. He probably heard about on the flight over there. I don't think he has called the office here yet. If he did no one said anything about it.
Anyways, all the Chinese that were in the plant left in February. There is supposed to be another group of them coming to learn the charging of the power elements, but heard they were having trouble with their visa's to get into this country.

Oh...I don't THINK it's Hanta (or any other known agent); just observing a bit of clinical similarity.

I loved that book! I keep trying to get people to read it and no one will, I do not understand it is a page turner I could not put it down.

Damn, I don't pick up a viral taxonomy book for three years and I am behind big time. Virology taxonomy changes as fast as a democrat agenda.

On the
SARS page CDC put out a
"Warden Notice" at 8pm 3/17 (Just as Bush was doing his speech). (The actual web page has the date wrong as 3/15) :
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HHS, has received reports of outbreaks of a severe form of pneumonia (also being referred to as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS) in Hong Kong SAR, Vietnam, and Guangdong Province in China, Canada, Singapore, Thailand, Germany and Switzerland. Approximately 170 suspected cases had been reported as of March 17. Cases appear to primarily involve health-care workers caring for patients with SARS and close family contacts. CDC is working closely with WHO and country partners in efforts to define the etiology of this infection, to track patterns of its transmission, and to determine effective strategies for its control and prevention. At the present time, a CDC travel advisory recommends that persons with elective or non-essential travel to Hong Kong SAR, Guangdong Province and Hanoi, Vietnam consider postponing such travel. Additional information is available at http://www.cdc.gov and http://www.who.int.

re: Thanks doc(s), expose countless peoples in other continents, to attend a conference)))
What an absurd, vapid and selfish remark. Pleasure travel exposes far more people to pathogens than a single med conference could, not to mention business travel. People with a little money (or borrowing it) simply *must* get itchy feet. I detest travel, myself. should I blame those who bring the bugs home for no better reason than their collection of boring snapshots?
Those same docs are also dying (at least two so far) from being exposed to sicky patients. Maybe they should just stay home when the phone rings, and patient is sick? With a silly comment like that, it must be tempting. Your docs and staff are what stands between you and your recurring "old man's friend".

I think that a doctor with a contagious disease, and observably so, climbing on an airplane with hundreds of other people, knowing that a percentage of those exposed will become ill, is the ultimate selfish act. There needs to be controls on travel from other lands. A health exam, before people are allowed into our country. One day soon, if we don't control access, thousands will die, just because of a similar selfish act.
