Bill Offers Assistance to Rural Areas

(March 18) -- Sen. Sam Brownback and 11 other colleagues from farm states introduced legislation on Capitol Hill last week designed to stimulate rural communities. Billed as the New Homestead Act, the Brownback bill gives people incentives to relocate to rural areas--including a tax credit to purchase homes.

In addition to providing up to $5,000 in tax credits to rural homebuyers, the Brownback bill would set up a $3 billion venture capital fund to help entrepreneurs start businesses that could help small towns to thrive. Additionally, the measure would forgive half of borrowers' student loans after five years of residence to attract young residents to rural areas.
