WASHINGTON (AP) -- Intelligence reports indicate a high risk that Iraq would use chemical weapons during a U.S.-led war to topple Saddam Hussein, Pentagon officials said Tuesday.
Those reports indicate Saddam has given field-level commanders the authority to use chemical weapons on their own initiative, without any further directives from the Iraqi leadership, Pentagon officials said.

I certainly hope that our chemical protections actually
work.
The problem of smoking out Hussain himself would call for GWB to actually take the field in a tank, and challenge Hussain to do likewise. If Hussain didn't take the challenge his hope of a historical legacy would then be down the drain. I thought the same during Gulf War I, but that was before the design of the Abrams was vindicated in battle so it would've required more courage for GHWB to have done that.

Why not call Iraq & the UN's bluff. Offer an 8 hour moratorium, chopper in an Inspection Team (along with French & German PM's, Kofi +Blix) and direct them straight to the Republican Guard units reported to have chemical weapons. If the Iraq army refuses it will be taken as PROOF POSITIVE they have WMD's.
And while their on-site, Nuke-em!

I think I see the Iraqi plan here.
In the 1980-1988 war with Iran, the Iraqi's flooded the outlying areas in the same regions talked about to bog down Iranian tanks, and then shelled them with gas to inflict heavy casualties and force them to withdraw.
It worked on the Iranians. I cant remember the name of the battle ( friend borrowed the book).
Its a different day today. Our guys train continually to fight in that environment, and our gear is able to handle their artillery launched chem weapons.
It will have a different outcome now.

This is my greatest fear, that chemical or biological weapons are used.

Here's my prediction: they won't actually fire any chemical weapons at us, but they'll have them in places we bomb, causing us to set them off.
