CNN: Apache helicopters shot up in Republican Guard attack
CNN live ^ | March 23, 2003 | cnn

Live report from Karl Penhaul after Apache choppers attacked Republican Guards near Karbala (sp?). This is north of Najaf and WSW 70mi of Baghdad.

He reports that our Apaches were shot up pretty bad. The IRG put up a "wall" of AAA. After returning to base, Apaches were "strewn around" instead of being parked neatly. He wouldn't confirm that all our Apaches made it back.

I saw footage of an A-10 flying, side to side, shooting off flares left and right. I'd guess, they may be in very tight mountain areas and would require a more agile flight vehicle than an A-10. A-10's don't hover as well as an Apache. B52's, they don't hover well, nor can they land on an aircraft carrier, had to explain that to my wife...

How do you know we aren't carpet bombing them. They have more than one tank.

Apaches are the tool of choice for this.

"I am sure that the leadership is going to get really serious about this war really quickly"

Yeah...this is a joke to 'the leadership' right now. What's next...the 'One Term President' mantra?

Why in the hell aren't we carpet bombing these republican gaurd divisions???

Maybe because our guys are too close? Or maybe we are carpet bombing them, and you're not hearing about it?

For that matter, where is the carpet bombing? Where are the B-52s. Regardless of my view on the politics of this damned war, if you're going to fight it, damn it, do it right.

Funny thing about this war. Karbala is in the middle of the gap that is supposed to be the "death trap" for the Americans and these Apaches just took out the armor for one of the divisions.

Meanwhile the public face of the Iraqi government are a pair of hack Baathist punks, a FM who is out of the country and of course a bunch of animals dressed in civilian clothes, drive Toyotas and execute PWs.

There are eleven Iraqi Regular Army divisions who literally vanished since Thursday.

Now either they're lying in wait to attack at the right time, or they stood down.

Again, funny thing this war.

This is a victory on a legendary scale -- and we're bitching and moaning about an Apache weathering some hits?

There seems to be a real problem today with the Coalition getting out its message about battle accomplishments...I can't figure it out...all negative today from all fronts

The reporter did (paranthetically) quote the American commander as stating over 70 T-72s were destroyed.

I don't remember it that way. I believe they went out to attack a formation of 70 tanks, not that 70 were destroyed. Of course, I'd be perfectly happy to be proven totally wrong.

If the triple A is that bad, can you fly in a C141 with a moab?

C-141s are MOSTLY history. Superseded by the new, C-17.

Disruptor alert.

No, not a disruptor alert Travis. The babies of Desert Storm are now manning AAA guns. Think about it, then speak.

Stop the handwringing....

We will lose many more lives in battle....this is not a guess but a reality....

We are causing far more losses to the enemy but we will take some losses in return. The losses could be in the hundreds, even the thousands if WMD is let loose.

Our military and political leadership is well aware and have numerous "what if" projections planned.

God Bless our troops!

Maybe because the reporter didn't know whether everyone was back yet. A reporter shouldn't say something if they don't know.

And check the posts about this engagement destroying 70 Iraqi T-72 tanks -- damn near regiment's worth of their best armor.

We are trying too hard to be nice.

There is some of that for sure. But I think there is an overreliance on hoping that the regime will collapse and all the enemy will surrender. That appears unlikely to happen now.

Since they didn't collapse we have only one option left. Kill their army, kill it dead. We should focus on it completely. And I am betting we will now.
