Why has Hutchison Whampoa's purchase of Global Crossing received almost no media attention?

I thought I read somewherethat that deal was nullified by our Gov't because of the amount of Defense Communications and G.C.'s involvement and that would be like giving away more of our technology to teh Communist Chinese. Am I incorrect about this? Everyone forgets however, that Hutchison Whampoa now owns and runs the Largest Port on Earth in the Bahamas, allowed to be built under Billy Jeffs 8 year treacherous reign.Nothing to see there, just stay asleep everybody, no worries 80 or so miles from our coast,no, of course not. They didn't try and buy The Long Beach Port either did they?Take those blinders off I say.

I bet his hiring was a set-up to find out what, exactly, the Chinese are up to.

There has been no better spokesman for the current US aministrations actions since 9/11 than Richard Perle.

His calm clear logic has put the left in a frenzy, that's why they named him the Prince Of Darkness. I sincerly hope this is not a sop to the UN/ Frogs etc.

The left will be celebrating tonight.

GLOBAL CROSSING'S RESTRUCTURING PROCESS

On January 28, 2002, Global Crossing filed its reorganization cases under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. An automatic "stay" immediately went into effect, prohibiting, among other things, all actions against the Company to collect pre-petition claims. Similar proceedings were commenced in the Supreme Court of Bermuda.

Global Crossing announced on August 9, 2002, that it signed a definitive agreement under which Hutchison Telecommunications Limited (Hutchison), a wholly owned subsidiary of Hutchison Whampoa Limited, and Singapore Technologies Telemedia Pte. Ltd. (ST Telemedia) will invest a total of $250 million for a 61.5 percent majority interest in a newly constituted Global Crossing on its emergence from bankruptcy. Global Crossing's creditor groups support the agreement. (Read the press release>>)

The agreement was approved the same day in a hearing before the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.

On September 16, 2002, Global Crossing filed its plan of reorganization with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. The Company may amend the plan of reorganization if necessary. The Company also filed a disclosure statement that describes the provisions of the plan of reorganization and provides sufficient information about the Company and other matters to enable creditors to make a fully informed decision on whether to vote to approve or reject the plan.

On October 21, the Court approved the disclosure statement. Then, from October 28, 2002 through November 22, 2002, the company's creditors voted to accept or reject the plan of reorganization.

On December 17, the Court confirmed Global Crossing's Plan of Reorganization (Read the press release>>). On December 27, the Court gave final approval to the plan.

Global Crossing expects to emerge from Chapter 11 as a reorganized Company in the first half of 2003.

Thank you for the reply. I do hope that the sale has not gone through, as suggested by another poster.

The left will be celebrating tonight.

Yeh, I was thinking that too...

Whatever the motivation, but the jerks like Buchanan end up being costly to the conservative movement. The damage is twofold: they are divisive and such up resources of the current conservatives, and they scare away minorities that we need to win in this country. And then Buchanan will turn around and point to Jews and Blacks voting Democratic. Well, thank you: that's in part because of your and your ilk, Pat.

Perle and Wolfowitz are great spokesmen for this administration, and often can say things that Bush himself cannot by tradition. And we need hawks in the administration, for what did the Dove Powell bring? When we lost 230 marines in Beirut, we knew exactly who the perps where and our plains were ready for scrambling from the carrier --- Powell convinces Reagan to withdraw without a shot. The Arabs felt they made America RUN! You know what happened during Clinton years, but Powell --- he was the one against the Desert Storm, against our invasion of Afganistan, and against Iraq.

That is, he was against all wars since Vietnam. This is a general that does not like to fight. No, I am not suggesting, G-d forbid, that he is not loyal to this country. But he does seem to be too placid.

So, without people like Perlem, Wolfowitz, and Cheney --- who is going to balance the "withdrawal syndrom?"

The libs are celebrating. And giving themselves high fives seeing that the "conservative" Buchanan does all the work for them.

Asked by a reporter, "You’re not worried about the Chinese controlling the Canal?" Mr. Clinton replied: "I think the Chinese will, in fact, be bending over backwards to make sure that they run it in a competent and able and fair manner.... I would be very surprised if any adverse consequences flowed from the Chinese running the canal."

Is this why that Congressman in California is demanding the telecom work for Iraq go to a US company?

It's all starting to come together now.

I hope so too: we had enough of technology transfer to the Chinese, with and without the government's help. I am very worried. It's hard to prevent them from buying assets: in a way, they are holding us hostage to our own ideals and principles of the free market. I am glad that the FBI was diligent enough to interfere.

And I am very disappointed that Perle put himself in this position, rendering him less effective in helping the President.

Because he was in negotiations to sell a majority share of the military's fiber optic network to the Chinese.

Good enough of a reason? Click.

Perle was an influence peddler who used his insider Pentagon title to get foreign clients and who sold out to the Chinese. "Unpaid" isn't the point.

See Richard Perle, Hutchison Whampoa. and China

Excerpts from the link in #134

Perle, one of George W. Bush's foreign policy advisers during the 2000 presidential campaign, was hired last week by the bankrupt Global Crossing telecommunications company to help it restructure a deal to sell a majority holding in the company to Hutchison Telecommunications and government-run Singapore Technologies Telemedia.

The United States government -- particularly the Defense Department and the FBI -- has national security concerns about the deal, according to The New York Times. It would put Global Crossing's fiber optics network -- which the military uses -- under Chinese ownership.

According to The New York Times, Perle signed a March 7 affidavit that was to be filed with the bankruptcy court.

That stated, "As the chairman of the Defense Policy Board, I have a unique perspective on and intimate knowledge of the national defense and security issues that will be raised by the (Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States) review process that is not and could not be available to the other CFIUS professionals."

Perle stated Thursday, "This language was wrong. The (Defense Policy Board) does not deal with these issues and my position could not possibly enhance my knowledge or perspective. Accordingly, I revised (the lawyer's) draft to delete the sentence. Because of a clerical error the reference was only deleted from one page but appeared on another. Thinking that all the necessary deletions were made I signed the affidavit. The document was not filed with the court."
