Nothing chaps my hide more than someone trying to PUSH their beliefs on someone else when it isn't invited or appropriate.

IB, I am almost always on your side, but not this time. This was a Christian minister who was offering his prayers in his way: why is that not ok?

If only Christians were allowed to do this in Maryland, then I would agree with you; but this honor is rotated so it is cool for him to name Jesus. And, just FWIW, I am a Jew.

In other words: "I don't care if I offend you as long as I'm offending you for what I think is a good cause."

Reminds me of when my dead relatives were baptized without my families consent or permission....It really broke moms heart when she found out

Nothing chaps my hide more than someone trying to PUSH their beliefs on someone else when it isn't invited or appropriate.

also reminds me when that teenager came to my door claiming he knew the one true religion and told me my own was a heresy - Imagine that - Roman Catholicism has been around for a long long time. That one really pi**ed ma off.

Yeah - go figure

aside, whats new in Texas? - its been real cold here (30 degrees) all week - even snowed today

I'm under the impression he WAS invited!

The pastor – a Vietnam veteran – was invited to give the prayer by Republican Sen. Alex Mooney. Hughes was Mooney's fourth guest. The other three were Jewish rabbis.

Hmmm... the Maryland Senate asked an evangelical minister to participate in the opening of the senate with prayer, as part of an ecumunical service. I guess they should have told the minister that he had to pray by "politically correct" standards, so as not to offend. More than likely, the minister would have said no thanks... that's not a real prayer. Don't ask for a prayer when you're really wanting a religious sounding, pious speech reflecting a meaningless, homongenous beliefs.

If they do not want a Christian prayer why ask a Christian to pray?

This is sooo stupid.

If you want a middle of the road prayer hire a Unitarian pastor, not a Baptist.

It is a violation of the Christian faith to pray to G_d without Jesus. There is another issue with praying to a "god" and not Jesus but I will not go into it here.

Suffice to say either stop asking for prayers or stop censoring - the Government cannot censor prayer.
