I can't imagine a stressed air controller saying, "Yeah, let's fly in one of thoese expensive C-130's into Bagdad empty once or twice just to see if it can land at the 8000 foot (civilain commercial jet) twin-runway airport inside the capital that we captured intact on Friday."

Obviously it's carrying SOMETHING the guys in the front lines around the airport need immediately!

I am going to disagree with you here. For me, it is NOT obvious that the first cargo aircraft into Baghdad International Airport (BIA) will be carrying anything of importance --- just the opposite.

If I were giving the orders, I would ask for several volunteer crews, and ask them to fly their mostly UNLOADED aircraft into BIA. I would do this fearing that the Iraqis might have some type of hidden assets or traps which they could bring to bear on BIA, and most certainly the most powerful propaganda and tactical victory they could get would to be bringing down a large cargo aircraft. In addition, it is likely to be the easiest target for them to hit.

A few relatively low-value flights like this would be very cheap insurance, and I would not wish to order any crew to make the trip.

I would think that whatever was on the plane would be equipment, supplies, concrete etc. and radar/comm needed to put the place in full operating mode.

Likely a few SAS and other assets as well to prepare Bagdad for transfer to our control.
