The treachery of Chirac

BEFORE a shot was fired in Iraq, Tony Blair blamed treacherous Jacques Chirac for putting British lives at risk.

By vetoing a UN threat of war, he said, the French President removed any chance of Saddam surrendering peacefully.

Well, British Servicemen have been killed. We can only hope Mr Blair will not forget.

He must surely return from the battlefield with a totally different vision of Europe’s future.

The PM started well by snubbing Vladimir Putin’s invitation to tomorrow’s anti-US bitching session with France and Germany.

But a price must be paid for their stand against freedom for Iraq.

We can dismiss any idea they were acting out of principle. In vetoing war, all three were pursuing naked self-interest.

Chirac had trade and political links to Saddam, including rumours of a “smoking bank account” and oil contracts.

Russia sold night vision goggles and radar jammers to Iraq. Putin is also worried about losing Iraqi contracts.

As for Gerhard Schroeder, he simply sold his soul for cheap votes.

The three war wobblers believe in a different form of democracy to Britain and America.

We give our politicians power for a time and take it away if we don’t like the way they use it.

Old Europe is arrogant and remote and thinks power belongs to the state, to be dished out as leaders see fit.

Hopefully, events have opened Mr Blair’s eyes. But will he now think again before surrendering on the euro, on defence and on foreign policy?

He cannot sign up to the new EU convention which would sever our hard-won alliance with America forever.

As Paris Match newspaper says, Mr Blair is in the driving seat, with a strong hand to play.

Now he must use it in the interests of real European democracy — Anglo-American style.

I skimmed a few of the threads about the France/german/Russian meeting....I don't recall any of them mentioning that GB had been invited, and had refused to come.....can you confirm?

They are attempting two things both of which would preclude the US (because we are innocent):

1.) Hide their paper trails etc for the WMD's and banned items they each sold to Saddam

2.) To recover lost billions in business interests.

They would have sold barbed wire and cyanide gas pallets to Hitler if they could have.

I heard this AM that Blair had been invited and had refused. I don't know about our President, but I'm sure we would have heard about it if he had been invited.

I have read suggestions that France and Russia FORGIVE THE DEBT owed by Saddam Hussein so that the new government of Iraq can get off to a good financial start. Forgiving debt is a popular idea with the left - let's see them put their money where their lying pacifist lips are.

This comes from The Sun - a staunch support of the Brits and US in dealing with Iraq. The Sun is also generally reliable and accurate in their reporting. Here we would also say they are 'balanced'. Might be a reason - The Sun is part of News Corp and a sister to Fox News. And for us red-blooded male types here on FR, The Sun Online has a great Page 3 (also included in the print edition)!
