Only 71% of the surveyed Americans could locate the Pacific Ocean. Not surprisingly only 62% of Americans could find their butt with both hands.

On a world map, Americans could find on average only 7 of 16 countries in the quiz. Only 89% of the Americans surveyed could find their own country. Quick you have five seconds to find: Burkina Faso, Tonga, Moldovia, The Artist Who Used To Be Baghdad Bob, Lichtenstein, Diego Garcia, The Iraqi Republic of France, Canuckland, Eritrea and Cleveland.

Yes. With the internet, etc. it is not a lack of information, it is a lack of 'will' and 'inspiration' which have to be imparted by the educational system and the individual also has an objective responsibility to better himself/herself.

What do you do about the adults who don't know jack? These weren't kids being polled. These were adults who have no excuse for being so ill-informed.

Yes. But, these results were from a cross-section of Americans. When the testing was limited to the entertainment industry, those that could actually understand the question correctly identified the Pacific Ocean only 11 percent of the time. However, in light of the education level of most the Hollywood elites, this was considered a good score. Hillary Clinton got it right, but its not clear whether she was given the answer in advance by David Letterman. Bill Clinton never recorded an answer as he was still talking about the format of the test and how it might impact on his legacy when time ran out.

I would also like to see some geography test runs comparing, say, high school freshman in the US, UK, Russia, Korea, Japan, Eygpt, etc. with the same geographic test. I know Japan is slipping, too. 20 years ago their students could probably point out all of those seas and countries and landmarks. It has dipped terribly in the last few years that many of THEM could probably not identify the Atlantic Ocean, too.
It has to do with standards, inspiration, and personal will/responsibility.

Sweden and Germany can continue to excel in geography . . . The US is happy to continue to excel in business, warfighting and technological innovation. It's all fun and games until the best-run corporation in the world builds the most technologically advanced weapon ever known, and the best military in the history of mankind drops it on the wrong building in Yugoslavia.

Maybe not, but I bet they could locate all the gender specific words in the Constitution, feel outraged, and contact the lawyers of the ACLU, all while reciting the ways to get qualify for welfare illegitimately, AND pop a condom over a zucchini in 10 seconds flat!! Gotta love public school education!

I know Japan is slipping, too More crap on the pile: Mothra is on the wing, and she's five miles from giving Kyoto a large helping of "better luck next life."

The probably came up through the public school system.
I wonder if any of them ever asks "Why didn't I learn this in school?"

Wouldn't you love to see the poll data broken down into 3 segments: Yes: 1)DemocRAT'S kids.
2)Republican's kids.
3)Libertarian kids.

Look how many years it took for Balboa to find it.
I always wondered why history credited him for the discovery of the Pacific Ocean when there were plenty of people on the Pacific islands and in Central and South America who went fishing in it every day.
I guess Balboa was a liberal and therefore the media of that time had to give him the credit. It's like the 'balanced budget'...the media contends that Clinton invented it (after vetoing it twice).

he other 29% could not find themselves in a chair. It's a good thing the kids are too stupid to understand percentages, they might be momentarily insulted by your statement before confusing themselves about what's going on.
To: TankerKC
I just dont believe that. Really? Of my four grown nephews, I'd guess you might find one who could find it and I wouldn't doubt that it would be entirely by a "lucky" guess. Seriously.

The wrong building? Care to clarify?
Assuming that a single mistake in targeting is attributable to the general level of geographical education in the US (a hilariously improbable stretch), are you suggesting that a Swede or a Frenchman could have done better?
