I won't deny we have a problem here in the South, and I completely agree with your concerns. But. I also have a son. He's grown now and doing quite well, btw.
When he was quite young (10-12), he started blazing his own trail. He did yardwork, he helped neighbors move, he babysat, he ran errands, sacked groceries for tips only, anything he could think of to make money.
When he discovered a huge hole on a busy street 2 blocks away, he marched over there every morning - early - and collected the lost hubcaps. Sat and Sun he set up a stand on that roadside and sold them. He didn't have a "real" job till he was 17, but he always had money in his pocket.
Tell your son to get creative! And tell him this FReeper wishes him all the best.
