While the Catholic Church has the full authority to make any statement they wish regarding any subject they wish, You simply can not talk about someones right to free speech when you telling anyone that disagrees with you to shut up.

I had hoped that the whole DC, Suzi S. debacle would have taught us that crying about free speech when we are trying to silence others is not an acceptable argument.

The 1st amendment only inhibits the gov't from telling you to shut up. The Church can't arrest you. They can only disassociate themselves from you. Ever heard of the right to free association? It's in the 1st amendment.
