In downtown Sac yesterday, I passed a card table set up to collect "recall" signatures. Now, I hate to stereotype, but the people behind the table were a woman who, quite frankly, looked like a welfare mother, and a slovenly man who looked like a labor organizer. Their sign -- "Recall Davis" -- looked like it had been prepared with a Magic Marker on the inside panel of a cereal box. The whole operation looked sloppy and low-rent. I wouldn't have given the duo much notice, except for reports that there are paid trolls getting people to sign what they think are recall petitions, only to have the petitions thrown away at the end of the day. Of course, anyone who suckers into signing the counterfeit petition now thinks they've signed a legitimate petition, and won't sign another one. The effort will fail, but it's devious, which is why we call him "Gray Devious."

If they are misleading people into signing a recall petition, then they are arguably committing a crime. If they are having people sign the real petition, and then throwing them away, they are also committing a crime.

Be sure to closely scrutinize this stuff. If this is actually happening, we need to insure these people are appropriately punished for subverting the democratic process.
