No matter what the historians write about Ike, no one can doubt that he earned the position.

No matter what the historians write about Ike, no one can doubt that he earned the position.Agreed. His route on the way to the position was certainly an interesting one and he passed up many others who felt they should have had a shot, but once in the position he proved without a doubt that he was the man for the job. Perhaps it took the best clerk to have ever served under General MacArthur to fill the position ;-) There are some who want to bash him for being a bit to cautious, but they seem to forget just what the landings entailed and that he was facing Erwin Rommel.

I would politely ask you to read the book about Eisenhower titled "The Politician" and learn about just "how" Ike made his meteoric rise in the military, then see if those facts change your thoughts about whether Ike "earned" his military positions... While you're reading, check out Ike's decision to "repatriate" some POWs we held, sending them to their certain death. This was not the act of a great man, regardless of his record as POTUS.
