They interfered with her freedom of religion when they doused her and took her to the hospital. They should have waited until she was clearly dead to douse the flames. (/sarcasm)

For her sake it might have been kinder to wait. Look what she did to her whole head.

The comments so far would suggest that the self-immolation was in vain, as no one cares what is going on. Doesn't anyone even have any interest in why France might be rounding up left-wing Iranians? Is France carrying water for the current rulers of Iran?

Somewhere linked between the words "HEAD" and "HOTTIE" is a great joke! But I'm too much in awe to put it together right now.

WOW!

You may be right regarding the french connection to the current regime..but I'm sorry, lighting up literally does not paint you or your cause with a sane brush.

The comments so far on this thread have not
been worthy of the usual standards and ideals
FReepers hold dear.

However misguided, this woman is protesting for
liberty in that god-forsaken mullah-controlled
prison they call Iran.

France is resisting regime change there just as
they did in Iraq.

Extremism in the defense of liberty...

The press is all over the map in trying to describe what's "left" versus non left. Let's straighten out, please, what "left wing" means in the context of Iranians? Who do they actually support, and who are they allied with? Are they pro-US, for example, or anti-US?

Are they aligned with the protests currently going on in Iran, or are they aligned with the groups suppressing the protests?

Isn't it the case that the group attacked recently by the French police were identified as "terrorists"? As in "fundamentalists"? Yet these leftists are protesting the police actions?

Somebody, please set the record stright!!

"Doesn't anyone even have any interest in why France might be rounding up left-wing Iranians? "

I still remember how in the 60’s the Buddhists in Vietnam who set themselves on fire and caused the liberals in America to say people in Vietnam were being oppressed by a puppet government that was unjust the government collapsed quickly. It is a strong message and many of the more squeamish of us will pay more attention to the cause.
Liberals who now love and revere Islamists will really feel sorry for the down trodden and oppressed Mullahs in Iran and their loyal following of useful idiots – the French.

In 1965 [or perhaps '66] a young student set herself on fire in the quad of West Chester University in PA. Because the fumes above the gasoline burn, she was in severe agony and died some days later.

She was protesting the war in Vietnam and the fact that as soon as the male students grades dropped below a 2.0 they were hauled off for the draft.

Right or wrong, that incident has remained in my mind's eye as clearly now as it did then. I don't know how people can do that to themselves. I can't think of much that would allow me to light my own fire.

Its just much too overwhelming for me to comprehend, and so I will not make a mockery of it either.
