Motorcycle was clocked at 157mph, court told

By Stewart Payne (Filed: 18/06/2003)

A motorcyclist was recorded travelling at 157mph as he flashed past a police camera, followed by a friend doing 148mph, a court was told yesterday.

It is believed to be the highest speed recorded on a British road and both riders were warned to expect a stiff penalty after pleading guilty to dangerous driving.

Neil Bolger pleads guilty after being caught in a police speed trap in Buckinghamshire doing 148mph

The men, both 29, were said not to be racing each other. Andrew Osborne, from Leamington Spa, Warwicks, who was clocked at 157mph, and Neil Bolger, from Gaydon, Warwicks, must wait until next month to find out their sentence, but were given interim driving disqualifications.

Magistrates in Aylesbury, Bucks, heard that the men were spotted on the A421 near Buckingham speeding through an underpass on a dual carriageway noted as an accident blackspot. The road had a 70mph limit.

Theresa Murphy, prosecuting, said they overtook a lorry on a sweeping bend before being caught by the speed trap.

Darren Rogers, defending Osborne, a master technician, argued that the case should be dealt with by magistrates and not referred to the Crown Court.

Nicholas Devine, defending Bolger, a lorry driver, said that although he was travelling at excessive speed there were no aggravating features. "There is no evidence of alcohol or drugs," he said.

The case was adjourned for four weeks for reports.

The Bloke was also leaning into a turn when he was caught!

Good for him! Hope he enjoys walking for the next two years.

Geez, at least they could have told us what the boys were riding. My guess would be Huyabusas, capable of approaching 200 mph. But not with me on it! The Brits are mad for their bikes.

(unless my eyes are too tired):
No mention of what brand/model of motorcycles were involved!

Guess they don't want other folks to get any ideas.

I was wondering about that, too. Whenever I've watched TV shows that show the Brit cops after a suspect, the dash/road cam always showed kilometers/hour.

Not only that, why would the camera be on a turn? Seems silly to me.

Also, based on my experiences, that curve and his lean angle look a little off for 157 miles an hour.

Well, we can rule out Harley Davidsons right off the bat, of course.

I wouldn't presume to vouch for the accuracy of the speedometer on my V65 Magna which I owned in college, but I took that up to around 166-168 once on a straightaway on a calm evening. My helmet was threatening to rip my head off at the time so I couldn't see the exact number.

My first instinct is to answer: COOL!

But, you can't let them continue to do this.. Some innocent is going to be killed eventually.

They're either going to have to move off the highway or go to germany and ride on the autobahn, where this kind of thing is expected.

It doesn't surprise me. It's a total police state.

The mile is still in common usage, as far as I can remember. My British friends talk about going "0 to 60" not "0 to 100", and the last time I was outside of London, the traffic report I had on was reading off distances in miles.
