show me the photo-op and you have credence. Maybe he had family to console? Maybe he wanted to be there to talk to people? Maybe he wanted to have hands-on experience in helping with the work effort? Show me the photo-op or stop whining about a man that drove across the country to put his hands into the work and get dirty.

He could have volunteered anywhere.

I'm not impressed when someone gets credit for what thousands of people did after 9/11. Wow, he gave a pint of blood. Call the wire services.

We had people who were at the center around the clock. They put in weeks of work. We also had a retired couple who do things like this all the time.
Do you think that there is only one tragedy like this that the Red Cross is involved with? There were floods and fires going on all the time during September and the volunteers still had to make sure those people involved were taken care of.

NY Daily News (9/20/01):

"When the attacks occurred, the director was in Los Angeles, preparing the play "Mephisto" for a theater group called the Actors Gang. The play was set aside, Robbins drove cross-country, and on Tuesday night he was spotted dishing out food at the Javits Center."

Variety:

Showbiz rolls up its sleeves

"TIM ROBBINS
actor-director

"I was in L.A. directing a play and I woke up and saw it on TV; it had already happened. I went and dry-heaved, then got on the phone and tried to find out where my kids were. I went into work because we had a rehearsal scheduled. I just told people to come to the theater if they wanted to be around people. They just came and watched TV. I was getting too frustrated watching TV so I cleaned this paint sink, just got turpentine and a wire brush and began cleaning it. That night I realized there were going to be no flights. So I rented a car and two of us left on Wednesday and got back to New York in 48 hours of driving. I think I slept about eight hours after we crossed the Mississippi. When something like this happens, to not be there for your kids, to be filled with such anxiety and fear — it was horrible."
