Iraqi Kurdish leader said to ask Israeli army officers to remain

Arbil, 2 July: Leader of Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Mas'ud Barzani has asked Israel to allow its army officers, who arrived in the country during the US-led war on Iraq, to remain.
According to a Kurdish source, Israel has accepted Barzani's request and the Israeli officers are presently positioned in an area near the city of Arbil, Barzani's stronghold.
The Israeli officers are responsible for the training programme of the Barzani's Peshmerga forces.
The source told MENA that the military Israeli activities in Iraq are approved by both the US and Britain.
The last few months have witnessed intensified contacts between Israel and Iraq's anti-Saddam opposition leaders and the different Kurdish factions.

Apparantly, the Kurds know good training when they see it and are willing to put whatever religious prejudice they might have aside in favor of good instruction. This should be a model to other Muslims. Jews and Muslims can co-exist for the mutual benefit of both.

i had no idea. politics in that area of the world are truly "byzantine"....very interesting and very positive news.

It's not surprising that the Kurds would see the Israelis as sympathetic to their cause. Although they are mostly Shia Muslims, they have received little support from the Arabs, who also have contrived (with Turks and Iranians) to suppress the formation of a Kurdish homeland.

I don't know all the details, but I do know that for many years Israel supported the Kurds with training and weapons.
