How did that ole recall clause get in there, communists?

A movement by California Progressives, notably Hiram Johnson, at the beginning of the 20th Century. In order to get rid of the stranglehold that the railroads and other special interests had on the government of California, they put the powers of recall, initiative, and referendum in the state constitution.
