WASHINGTON -- Howard Dean said Tuesday he has the best chance of beating President Bush because he appeals to supporters of former independent candidates John McCain, Ross Perot and Ralph Nader as well as to Democratic Party faithful.

Dean said he believes his candidacy will energize millions of young people and independents who have been turned off by standard electoral politics.

"We've got to bring new people into the electoral process," Dean said on NBC's "Today" show. "We're going to say that to the people of Ralph Nader, ... people who voted for John McCain and Ross Perot. ... and that's the beginning of the coalition that I think can change the occupancy of the White House.

I watched Lieberman give a speech on tv last night. And you know what? I hope he wins the nomination. He is the best of all the Dems out there. I would rather face the possibility of a Lieberman "centrist" admin than face the prospects of a liberal Dean admin.

Dean, apparently, is running for messiah. Of any of the other Democrat dwarves, he is the only one who strikes me less as a cynical careerist and more as a true believer.

I hope he wins the nomination. It will make for an interesting election cycle.

If the economy and jobs do not improve by the next 9 to 12 months he just may have a chance. If he tells the people what they want to hear. He does not have a record he has to defend. The economy will be the largest issue in the upcoming election. Mark my words.

The popularity of dean with demorats shows just how desperate they are for a candidate. His new ad in texas looks like crap. A real "deer in the headlights" bomb. If he is their best chance there's nothing to worry about. He'll get zero support in the south.

I understand what you're saying, but as far as I'm concerned, an ultra left candidate like Dean is and will be completely unelectable.  It'll just increase W's coat tails by keeping any rational potential dem voters away from the polls feeling like they don't have a dog in this fight.

That is Lieberman's strategy. He will be the prosperity candidate in the "center." His positions will be hawkish on foreign policy and terrorism. He will throw in some of his social moralism. The main distinction between him and GWB--to the apolitical middle--will be the economy. Only on the two extremes do voters worry about judicial nominees. In the middle, it's pocketbook and security issues. Anyway, if I had to pick one of the nine, it'd be Lieberman.

I hear ya. But imagine you could vote in the Dem primary. That would be gut check time. Would you REALLY want to help Dean make it to the finals? I don't know if I could play chicken like that.

Per Michael Medved, Bush may actually lose in a Bush/Dean matchup.

Why? Because a big factor in Bush's win in 2000 (and his Dad's loss in 1992)was the third party candidate. Bush Senior lost because of Ross Perot's 18% of the vote. And the present Bush won because of Ralph Nadar's Green Party in Florida, which, as I recall, got 3% of the vote.

If someone like Dean wins, he may be just left enough that Green Party types will vote for him. If so, that's a large block of votes that may give him the edge, esecially if someone like Pat Buchanan runs again, siphoning votes off of Bush from the Right.

Dean may indeed be the nightmare candidate. Bush needs an opponent that liberals - but not leftists - will vote for.

Were we to survive a Dean presidency as a nation, as a republic, the backlash would guarantee Republican majority rule for at least a generation. Lieberman, on the other hand, would postpone the collapse of the third way, prolong the madness precisely because he is the best dem out there. He would keep the establishment left on life support where a reckless and hubristic Dean would unwittingly kill it off, and quickly. So I hope for Dean. Momentary pain, long term gain.

Agreed. It's just about as boring as Greenspan would want it to be. Just not enough fluff jobs for tech graduates. There's the problem. The kids are freaking out because they can't get rich and retire in a couple of years.

Actually, I'm kicking around the idea of switching over (and back, of course) to cast a ballot for Al Sharpton.  But then again, there's NO chance he'll get the nomination.  I just want to see him get some time Saturday night to rip the democraps at the convention.
