France should train its own imams, says minister

JOUY-EN-JOSAS, France, Aug. 28 — Paris should open a seminary to train imams as part of a national strategy to fight the spread of Islamic fundamentalism in the country, Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy said on Thursday

Sarkozy, the driving force behind the creation this year of a council to better integrate France's five million Muslims into society, said two-thirds of the 889 imams in France lived on welfare and more than 60 percent did not speak French.
