In Spring of 2001, Harvey Gantt thought about challenging Jesse Helms for a 3rd time. However, he decided not to run again. He complained about Jesse being a dirty campaigner.

Well, the nomination is his if he wants it, I would imagine. Why didn't he run when Jesse said he was retiring, then, if that was his reason for not running?
