Bottled Water For Pets

By Fisher News

SEATTLE, WA - While nearly half of Americans drink bottled water every day, that habit may start catching on for your pets too.

It was all Bill Fels' dog Jason's idea. He wouldn't drink a drop of water.

"Wasn't drinking water period -- out of the toilet, anywhere," said Fels.

But when Bill Fels took Jason camping, Jason loved the stream water.

"I took him to the vet, figuring there was something wrong, the vet said he just doesn't like the taste and flavor of city water," Fels said.

So, Bill started purifying mountain water for Jason and his friend's dogs. And, "Pet Refresh" was born.

Fels now drives to the Carbon River near Mt. Rainer to fill up. He filters out the natural bugs and bacteria before adding his special flavors.

"Beef and chicken," he said. "Right now, I'm working on a chlorophyll for nervous dogs with nervous stomachs, bad breath."

And Fels says Pet Refresh is not just marketed for dogs, but for cats, birds and rodents too.

But do your pets really need bottled water?

Veterinarian Ann Brudvik says tap water is safe, but knows people often hate the taste.

"There are some pets that find it that way too, but when you are talking about dogs, they will generally eat or drink just about anything," Brudvik said.

So, who would pay about 2 bucks a bottle for dog water?

"For all the other things we get our 13 pound little Schitzu, bottled water wouldn't be out to the question," said Emmett Garbett.

"Ha ha, I would think it's ridiculous, really ridiculous," said Sandy Hill.

"They're part of the family," Fels said. "I don't believe you skimp on your family. Is it a luxury item? Perhaps."

So, go ahead... laugh all you want. But Bill and Jason will keep working on new products.

A simple water filter would do the trick to remove the objectionable chlorine. Brita, anyone?

You hit it. Was just in NY. Water was 89c / pint bottle. At that rate, it would be $7.12 a gallon. Not a whisper of outrage.

Try charging 7 bucks a gallon for gas and see what happens.

Of course, a lot of that is media fueled hype. No pun intended.

BTW, I serve both my cat and dog (chihuahua) CATSIP which is available in the pet department. Both love it.

My 18 year old cat has early stage renal insufficiency, which means he needs to drink lots of water. His preference is for canned food mixed with lots of water to form a broth. The humans of the household dutifully water, and re-water, and re-water his food. After about 3 waterings of the same food, he begins to give it skeptical looks, and we know it's time for new food. He has us very well trained :)

My cat only drinks bottled water. That's all I give him. He's been drinking it for years.

Who would pay $2 a bottle for water for their pet? Tap water works fine for me...

What an utter crock!! I heard this story on the radio yesterday and this guy was claiming his dog would go without water for a couple of weeks at a time. There is no way that any mammal, and probably no other creature on earth, can survive that long without water.

As someone on this thread already said--there is a sucker born every minute! But then, I guess we should bless the entrepreneurial spirit that has made our country great.

this for an animal that'll drink out of the toilet and eat from the cat-box... great idea for the stupidly extravagant.

My wife told me once, "the only difference between a man and a dog is... you can keep the man out of the cat box"
