I was jut talking to a professor from Jeruselam Univ. yesterday and he told me that the biggest threat in the middle east today is that there is going to be a civil war between the Arabs because the majority of the Muslims want to come into the 21st century and the Jihadists are destroying their chances. He said that Isreal's big challenge is to stayout of the crossfire when this civil war erupts. He also said that President Bush has good intentions but is misguided because there can never be a democracy in Arab Country because the Arabs only understand one kind orf leadership... brute force and absolute power. He said that as soon as the US leaves Iraq, the War Lords will take over and divide the country into Kurds, Shiites, and Wahabbis.

RE: replies 490 and 500.
I totally agree. You said it better than I could have. Great replies.

It's almost a relief in a strange way. I understand what you are saying. You put it into rational words, and thanks for the interesting info on your dad's perceptions pre-WWII.

That sounds right to me on some days and other days I am more optimistic.
I think unless we are willing to stay in Iraq for 10 years or so (which I doubt we would be willing to do), then I think the professor you talked to is right.
My fear is that Israel tries to contain the PLO until a huge chemical blast or catastrophe occurs. Then it's all out war.
But I have been keeping up with the Iranian threads we have on FR post by DoctorZin (sp?) and I can see that the young people especially want freedom from the tyranny they live under. As well, there have been a few books written that detail how young people across the world with access to the internet are seeing that countries they have been taught are monstrous, are really not and they want what we have - freedom.
The internet will change the world in more ways than we imagined. IT won't happen overnight, but it will happen over decades.

Reading your tagline reminded me of how pale and sad Tony Blair looked on television yesterday. He has been a staunch ally; we owe him so much and he's paid so dearly.

Kesha's a weirdo, eh? And now I see that the National Socialists weren't socialist, according to her, because you could own private property. (Oh, taking Jewish property and redistributing it doesn't count, she mentions.) Got it. Massive denial. Typical German.
