It does not matter how he became addicted...he is addicted. Making a distinction between a "good junkie" and a "bad junkie" is a cop out and for Rush's sake I hope is not listening to that excuse anymore. That attitude of not being a "real" junkie probably contributed to his problem. Hopefully Rush will be able to overcome his problem and his followers will understand that drug addiction is not just for inner-city crackheads or trailer-park speed freaks.
We should also pray for Marta, who has likely suffered with her husband's addiction in ways that no one knows.
The addiction was very likly caused in the hosital due to surgery. I doubt it was for recreation, I think it was extreme pain that made him take the many pills.
There is no easy answer for him in the future.

He has been clean/sober a long time. He was and is rich, famous both while he was addicted, and now after many years of continuous sobriety.
He gives something back. He funds (and works in) a rehab facility in the Caribbean.
There are other figures. Most you don't hear about, because they FOLLOW the precept of anonimity.
I feel being rich and famous and addicted has both positive and negative aspects. I truly hope Rush can apply the positive.
