October 11, 2003 -- RUSH Limbaugh's loyal listeners are unlikely to desert him now that he's admitted to an addiction to painkillers. That's the word from talk-radio experts, who say Limbaugh made the right move when he 'fessed up on his radio show yesterday.

"Source please."

I heard it with my own two ears. I was always disappointed to hear Rush after a musican died because he always made some ugly, callous statement while fans were grieving. When Frank Zappa died of cancer, Rush dismissed him as just being part of the "Arts and Crossiants crowd", which was his little put down he used a while back. He couldn't call him a doper at least because Zappa was one of the cleanest musician in the biz. But I did hear him say those things about Zappa, Garcia and Cobain.

It is what Rush's philosophies and everyday takes on subjects that listeners want to hear. Rush portrays things similarly to the way millions of Americans see them.

Not just that. Rush backs his opinions up with hard facts and meticulous logic. That is his real strength. Conservative talk show hosts are a dime a dozen. But nobody who can build a case the way Rush does and at the same time keep his audience's rapt attention.

"I hope liberals show him compassion so he can get a good understanding of the compassionate nature of liberalism and why there's room for it in the world," Harrison said.

Yeah, that's gonna happen! /sarcasm

Mr Limbaugh is professionally dead.

Don't bet the farm on that.

Maybe, had he not moved outside of the Law, that could have been a worthwhile pursuit for Mr Limbaugh?

There has been no evidence offered that proves he did anything unlawful. I'm waiting for the full story to come out from the investigation.

Rush did not have a prescription for the thousands of pills he bought from pushers in Denny's parking lots.

I've seen no evidence that this even occurred. Right now, it is just the story of the housekeeper. I'm reserving judgement until all the FACTS are known.

I agree with you. IMO, Rush will be welcomed back with incredible ratings, which will tick off the leftists even more.

Compassion is a virtue that, pound for pound, is weighted more on the conservaitve side of the spectrum than it is on the leftist side.

Dittohead, I doubt it. I get impatient when Rush doesn't move on to something I think is more important (I do like the football talk though). I don't even like his personality that much but Rush is the best at what he does -most articulate, passionate, funniest etc.

I was thinking about the alcoholism around me - neighbors, best friend's husband, former spouse etc. There can't be too many families that particular addiction hasn't touched.

Hard to believe that all these pundits and even FR posters have never had their lives touched by an addiction. The rate of stone throwing at Rush has been stunning.

Yeah, thanks for clarrifying. "Dittos" is shorthand for "Love the show; thanks for being there...". I was just saying that I have been an avid listener (who is largely in agreement with the content) but that I would not call it religious devotion.

I don't panic or feel guilty when I don't tune in or can't get to a radio.

I listen most days for the full 3 hours but there are periods where I am listening to music before his show comes on and I just don't tune over. Maybe I'll listen on a vacation and maybe I won't (also depends on if I am driving at the time).

Only an idiot can distinguish between a recreational drug user like Kurt Cobain and someone that gets addicted to prescription painkillers due to a severe back injury....

His career has more life that your career ever will have. But, we will put you on record as saying his career is over. Because, there is little doubt that Limbaugh's audience will remain the largest and he will completely his nine-year, $285 million dollar contract.

The difference is Cobain was a loser that used drugs for recreational purposes. Only freakin' jackass can't see the difference between than and someone who has a back injury become addicted to painkillers.

Is there a difference between Green Bay quarterback Brett Farve and baseball player Darryl Strawberry? Of course.

And, you're another left-wing moron that can distinguish between recreational drug use and getting addicted to painkillers due to a back injury. You're classless piece of trash.

LOL. You'd best get your facts straight, lefty. Recreation indeed...

GUITAR WORLD: Why did the drugs happen? Were they just around?

COBAIN: I had done heroin for about a year, off and on. I've had this stomach condition for like five years. There were times, especially during touring, when I just felt like a drug addict-even though I wasn't-because I was starving [an outgrowth of his condition-GW Ed.] and couldn't find out what was wrong with me. I tried everything I could think of. Change of diet, pills, everything. . . exercise, stopped drinking, stopped smoking, and nothing worked. I just decided that if I'm going to feel like a junkie every f****ing morning and be vomiting every day then I may as well take a substance that kills that pain. I can't say that's the main reason why I did it, but it has a lot to do with it. It has a lot more to do with it than most people think.

Professionally dead?

Professionally dead would mean large numbers of Rush's fans ceasing to be fans. I've been following the Rush threads here on FR and I see no evidence of this happening. The only people writing Rush off are those who didn't like Rush in the first place. His fans overwhelmingly seem to be sticking with him. So I see no reason to think that Rush's career is finished. Unless his fans desert him, he's still in business.

Believe me, I have had back surgery, and I was given the same drugs Rush enjoyed. They are very pleasant. However, I was not a weak sister like Rush, and when the prescription ran out, I used Motrin as my doctor recommended. I did not "choose" to treat my pain with this drug. I did not beg a lowlife to obtain this drug from pushers so that I could continue to enjoy its pleasant effects. I am telling you that Rushie's story that he continued to use this drug to ease his pain is total BS. He continued to use the drug because it is very very pleasant to use it.
