Denominational map of America?

Posted on 08/16/2004 12:31:14 PM PDT by fishtank

Has anyone here seen or do you know of a denominational map of America?

I'd like to see the country broken down by both denominational affiliations and also by Biblical adherence.

My guess is that there would be a close correlation to the blue state - red state map made famous in the 2000 election.

I know Barna did a Biblical adherence poll recently by denomination, i.e. Assemblies of God and Southern Baptist were VERY high in Biblical adherence, etc.

Any help out there on this?

Thanks.

All I know is that in Richmond, you've got about a 50% chance of being Baptist...

Sounds right to me... we Catholics are used to suffering.

I can't take this map too seriously. California is Catholic only in that it has a lot of hispanics. This map paints with too broad a brush -- Some of the largest evangelical churches are in southern California, but you'd never know it by this map. It may have some usefullness, but it can also be quite misleading.

Baptist/Methodist ping. Looks like Georgia is Baptist with the exception of two areas. Alaska is a shocker. Uthah being Mormon - who'd a thunk it?

You are quite right. This map lists only mainline denominations and paints with way too big of a brush. For instance, the Catholic populations in Charlotte and Atlanta are growing rapidly and they don't even appear on the map. This is misleading and pretty much useless.

North Carolina is a little strange. Especially up the i-85 corridor between Charlotte and Raleigh, I would have thought that was definite Baptist territory.

Thanks for the first stab at the question.

I hate to be repetitive, but the map seems a bit dated and generalized. However, it's better than nothing and it DOES get the ball rolling. Just for grins, how did you find it? What word search did you use?

Well, I attend a Baptist church that is two towns over... Hawaii style towns, so not that far. There's a church right down the street from where I live too... And about half a dozen a little further down that street.

But I'll drive an extra 10 minutes to get to my church.

But I'm not Baptist... ;-)

You probably have some Moravian (Winston-Salem), Methodist and other influences in there...a lot of Wesleyan circuit riders would've gone thru there.

Very similar map county by county on the PDF link.

http://www.csmonitor.com/2002/1010/csmimg/amreligions.pdf I guess they didn't have Presbyterians or other denominations in the counting.

Well of course for the that area. But I just don't see it. Except for the W-S area and the area around the larger markets (where all the transplants have moved into), most of the state is old school Methodist or Baptist. I just would have thought the areas that weren't read for the most part would have been shaded for the Methodists

But hey it's not that important though. Have to say I learned, at least according to this map, a little about my state. Interesting
