Someone very dear to me is in this church in the south. His church is works based and the doctrines glorify man versus God. They teach that you are not saved by faith in Jesus Christ and the work at the cross but that you are not saved until you are baptized. Their doctrine of baptism is for the remission of sins not that it is a public display of their faith.

That is definitely a COC doctrine, although they are not a works based church in the way you are thinking of, except for the need for baptism by immersion as an initiation into the body of the saved.

What does the Bible say?

Mark 16:16: He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Acts 2:37-38: Now when they heard [this], they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men [and] brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Acts 22:16: And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord

Galatians 3:26-27: For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. (Here we see there is no conflict between the scriptures saying that faith saves and the scriptures saying that baptism saves. This passage relates the two commandments of faith and baptism explicitly)

Colossians 2:11-13 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with [him] through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses (Another passage relating faith and baptism. Baptism is clearly a prerequisite to salvation in these passages, but the doctrine of baptismal regeneration is false. Merely being baptized without faith will only get one wet.)

Romans 6:3-7 : Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also [in the likeness] of [his] resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with [him], that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.For he that is dead is freed from sin.

I Peter 3:20-21: Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. The like figure whereunto [even] baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ

For the Bible to say that baptism saves does not negate the fact that the Bible says faith saves. We see in Galatians 3:26-27 that they go together. For mere belief is not the Biblical faith that saves. The devils themselves believe. We see in James 2:17- 24:

Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
