I didn't mean to avoid an argument, but it doesn't belong to a thread about confession. The notion that salvation is by faith alone is not supported by the scripture. I wrote a summary of what the Church teaches on faith, grace and works not long ago; I'd be happy to explain further on an appropriate thread.

It may also be helpful to point out Augustine's writing on the matter of Predestination of the Saints

You'll find Augustine believed in irresistible grace. Perhaps he was the first Protestant, eh?
