From the Archbishop
May 30, 2007
Dear Brethren:
On St. Peter's Day, June 29th, at 11:00 a.m. the College of Bishops will meet at St. Peter's Pro-Cathedral, Oakland, California for the Liturgy of St. Peter. Then in solemn assembly the Bishops will elect the new Archbishop for the Province of Christ the King.
The Mass will be open to all those who wish to attend this historic occasion. It is significant that the election take place at St. Peter's Pro-Cathedral on St. Peter's Feast Day, for the Province was first established in that church.
Please pray for the Bishops at this time.
With every good wish and blessing,
The Most Reverend Robert Sherwood Morse
What is a ‘Pro-Cathedral’?
Google the term and you'll see many such. I will assume St. Stephens is a "pro-cathedral" because it is Archbishop Morse's home church, though the archdiocese is centered across the country in Washington, D.C.
Perhaps the other APCK FReepers can add more. (I never did make a list of you all...)
Thanks.
I recently asked someone the same question. It was a complicated answer, the most I could make out was a normal parish church that serves as a temporary home for a bishop until a normal cathedral is built. I think it being a pro-cathedral may give it more complicated set of rules regarding who has authority over it, regarding the Deans and Canons and such.
I wonder if it necessarily contains the bishop's official cathedra, or throne.
