In some ways it does appear the Vatican has been “late” but remember the Moslems and the Church did fight against abortion rights at some UN conference in the 1990s.
Perhaps it is hard for the Vatican to see which is the more dangerous, Western secularism or nutty militant Islam. Western secularism leads to spiritual death and Islam although not truly attractive to western secularists will bring physical death and persecution and conversion if only by the sword if it is not challenged and “quarantined”.
It has become a numbers game. The birth rates throughout Europe are not enough to sustain the existing population. The shortfall of workers is being made up by the migrants from the youngest nations ie., muslim countries. A great book detailing this decline is "America Alone" by Mark Steyn.Europe is going to fall and the question really is can Islam be civilized, or will it always be a radical death cult.
BTW, America is the only modern industrialized nation maintaining it's population (just barely).
