**I would answer that one cannot kindle in oneself a devotion to Mary; it is a flame ignited by the Holy Spirit, a fire that descends from above, a gift. One can and should pray for this gift perseveringly. **

Many people have prayed for this flame and received it.

Thanks Salvation! I appreciate the poster’s inclusion of the Icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help.

Just curious- why not pray to God as the bible tells you to?

Do only people who pray to Mary have a special ‘in’ with the Lord? *wink*

I get the most hate-filled comments when I ask...

God bless you, brother. May he enlighten your mind, and kindle a love of holiness in your soul.

BTW, can you name the 15 ( or 20) "Mysteries of the Rosary"? Can you name the Person who is central to them? Can you name the Book from which they were taken?

*wink*

We do. We also have the intercession of the saints.

When we pray to Mary, we are simply asking her to pray to God for us, to intercede for us before the Throne of Grace. We are fortunate to have such a wonderful Mother to help us on our way to heaven.

"Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us now and at the hour of our death."

Of course, we can also pray to God directly. The Catholic Mass, for example, is full of prayers to God the Father, through His Son Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit. The Lord's Prayer is also an important part of every Mass.

The Mass (Divine Liturgy) is the ultimate prayer to God. There is none greater. At the Mass, Christ’s final, completed, once-for-all eternal Sacrifice is made present to us. How unspeakbly blessed we are! As wonderful a prayers as the Rosary is, it pales in comparison ...

Orthodox ping.

I’d be interested to hear from converts to Holy Orthodoxy about their experience in developing a devotion to Panagia. My wife said it all came together for her during the Great Lent when her father lay dying and she prayed the Akathist throughout that Great Lent. I have been told that its the last devotion of the The Church which most converts come to.

Dear Religion Moderator,

This is a caucus thread, and there are two posters here showing bad manners. I’m requesting that their posts be removed.

I have a copy of that very icon in my dining room. When I was down on my luck, it was one of my very few possessions. Now it holds a place of prominence in my home in gratitude for the peace of mind she helped to bring to me.
