Like I said, in a charismatic mass, I would cut them a break. Understand that the Vatican is not smacking them down. Eastern Rites use the orans for the laity, so as long as it is allowed for one, I’ll cut them a break in their own masses. I have been told over and over that it is a “legitimate prayer posture” Fine, do it at home or after Holy Mass. It’s not for the liturgy.

However, in any other Latin rite, this is a priestly gesture, not even allowed for Altar servers.

Please explain the “orans” position? Never heard of it.

Great article!
I wish someone could get this through to the general Catholic population.

The Eucharitic ministers at my parish have gotten into the habit of the Orans position during the Lord’s prayer. The Deacon doesn’t do it, so I wonder why they feel the need to.

Did they also shut down the traditional Catholic forum?

Actually, no. It’s still up but the rules for that forum are totally different than the rules for the others. If you want to come in and slam the traditional Catholics, it’s fair game. Do that on the Eastern Christianity forum and you get tossed.

One of the ladies was a forum supporter, monthly. She held subscriptions to three of their magazines, threatened to pull all her cash and wrote a letter of apology to make it back on. I refused to do any of it. All the “refugees” as we called ourselves, would get together on a Yahoo group for a while. She would tell us what was going on there. It was sad.

I was really addicted to the forums, sent them money the whole nine yards. In someways, being tossed was the best thing that happened to me.

“I’d rather be here.”

Happy to have you, and your thoughtful comments.

Thank you so much!

I was a FReeper long before joining CAF. I thought that some of us were making headway there to bring tradition back to the parishes. The owners worked against us.

I would use the term, historically Catholic. Handholding is not historically Catholic, genuflecting is. I always said that being Catholic means many flavors but all of us deserve the flavor that we like. You cannot subject all of us to innovation without one historically Catholic liturgy per Vicariate. It’s only fair. If you want a Charismatic liturgy, cool. Give me my Holy Mass with all the smells and bells sprinkled with Latin and we’ll call it square.

Howdy, mom.

I heard you were talking about NFL referees praying the Pater Noster at Holy Mass. Thought I’d drop in and say, “Hey.”

I’m really more of a monarchist, however. Posting on a site called “free republic” gives me the creeps, truthfully.

If people feel so compelled to perform gestures, there are plenty in the N.O. that seem to be neglected in many parishes that would be nice to see done properly:

Blessing oneself with holy water in an actual sign-of-the-cross (instead of a vague flapping motion while hollering hello across the vestibule to a friend; genuflecting (right knee to the ground, not some psuedo-curtsy or head-bob); the mini-blessing (mind, lips, heart) before the Gospel reading; holding the hands in a praying posture instead of with boyfriend, wife, kids, etc, cell phone; striking the breast during the Confiteor; bowing during the “Incarnation” part of the Creed; bowing the head and striking the breast at the Consecration; some reverent action (pause and bow head, or genuflect, etc, depends on arrangement of church) before receiving the Eucharist, instead of a McDonald’s-style fast food line....

As with the priest, there are specific physical postures and gestures for the laity that have deep symbolic meaning and enhance our genuine participation in the mass.
