Feast of Saint Cainnech ( Kenneth ) of Scotland, and Ireland

Cainnech ( Canice, Kenneth ) was born in 515 or 516, at Glengiven, near Dungiven in Ireland. He died and was reposed at Aghaboe in 599/600. His feast day is commemorated on 11 October in the Roman Rite Catholic Church and on 1 or 14 August in the Eastern Orthodox Church.
A lot of what we know of Cainnech comes from legend. However, he is documented by Saint Adomnán (also known as Eunan ), the ninth the abbot of Iona who died in 704. Adomnán was a hagiographer and his greatest work Vita Columbae or Life of Saint Columba contains references to Cainnech.
Cainnech's background
His real name was Cainnech moccu Dalánn. Cainnech's father Lughadh Leithdhearg was descended from the CorcoDalann or Ui Dalainn, a tribe whose ancestor, Dalann, is traced back to Fergus ( King of Ulster ), son of Ross, son of Rudhraighe. The Corco-Dalann were from an island referred to as "Insula Nuligi", and is usually identified with Inis-Doimhle or Inis-Uladh, which is now the Little Island, in the River Suir, south-east of Waterford.
Lughadh was a distinguished bard,a professional highly trained, learned poet. As with many men of the bard class, Lughadh travelled and wandered throughout the country at the time. Lughadh settled at Glengiven, in what is now County Londonderry. Lughadh ended up under the favour and protection of the chief of Cianachta. Lughadh became the utor of the chieftain's son, Geal Breagach.
Cainnech's mother, Maul or Mella, attained an eminent degree of sanctity. The church of Thompleamoul or Capella Sanctae Maulae seu Mellae, beside Kilkenny city, was dedicated to God under her invocation.
Early life
Cainnech spent his early years watching his chieftain's flocks. In early Christian Ireland the druid tradition collapsed, with the spread of Catholicism. The study of Latin and theology in monasteries flourished. In 543 sensing a higher calling, Cainnech became a pupil at the monastic school at Clonard. During the sixth century, some of the most significant names in the history of Irish Catholicism studied at the Clonard monastery. It is said that the average number of scholars under instruction at Clonard was 3,000. Twelve students who studied under Saint Finian became known as the Twelve Apostles of Ireland; Cainnech was one of their number. It was at Clonard that Cainnech became a friend and companion of Saint Colmcille.
In 544 he was studying in the school of Glasnevin, with Saint Kieran of Clonmacnoise and Saint Comgall of Bangor, under the tuition of Saint Mobhi. When plague scattered that community, he went as a monk the monastery of Llancarfan in Glamorganshire in Wales, under Saint Cadoc. He was ordained a priest there in 545. He left for Rome to obtain the blessing of the reigning pontiff. In 550 he had returned to Glengiven, where he converted his foster-brother, Geal-Breagach, who afterwards assisted him in founding Drumachose, in nearby Limavady.
Scotland
Cainnech went to Scotland in 565. In Scotland Cainnech was known as St. Kenneth, and was closely associated with Saint Columba's missionary work. Adamnan tells of the arrival of Cainnech, on Iona. Saint Columba had a prophecy of a "certain holy and excellent man, who will arrive here among us before evening." God had provided Cainnech with a safe and calm crossing, even though the sea was perilous and stormy that day. Saint Columba received him that evening with all honour and hospitality.
Cainnech built a church in the place now known as Saint Andrews. Cainnech's name is still recalled in the ruins of an ancient church, Kil-Chainnech on Tiree Island, in a burial ground, Kil-Chainnech, in Iona and Inch Kenneth Inch Kenneth off Mull.
Cainnech built monastic cells on the island of Ibdon and Eninis, an oratory called Lagan-Kenny on the shores of Loch Laggan (the remains of which are marked on the OS map), and a monastery in Fife on the banks of the Eden.
Ireland
Cainnech spent a good deal of his time in County Meath and Ossory in what is now County Laois. In Ossory he had a good repute with the king, Collmann son of Feradach. Colman gave him grants of land including Aghaboe("the field of the Ox") which became his principle monastery. He founded a monastery and Abbey of Aghaboe. Aghaboe grew in importance, and in the 7th century it sent St Feargal as a missionary to the church of Salzburg. Aghaboe become for a time the site of the bishop's see until under Norman influence in the twelfth century the see transferred from Aghaboe to Kilkenny. In 1346 Diarmaid Mac Giollaphádraig burned the town of Aghaboe and the cemetery and church, and completely destroyed Cainnech's shrine along with Cainnech's bones and relics.
Kilkenny ( Irish: Cill Chainnigh "The Church of Cainnech" ) was originally the name of a church erected by or dedicated to Cainnech, but was afterwards extended to the townland and parish. Kilkenny was one of the last parts of Ireland to be converted to Catholicism. Tradition asserts that in 597, Cainnech led a Catholic force to Kilkenny to eliminate the last bastion of Druidic rule in Ireland. The last Archdruid of Ireland had retired with his Council to a mound in Kilkenny for safety. Cainnech led an army there and overcame them. He founded a monastery near what is now the Church of Ireland's Saint Canice's Cathedral. Saint Cainnech of Aghaboe is the secondary patron of Kilkenny.
Chain of Cainnech
In his old age Cainnech retired to an island in Loch Cree, since drained, and wrote a commentary on all four Gospels. This became known as Glass Kinnich ( Glas-Chainnigh ) or Chain of Cainnech, This was long preserved in his church and became a continuous commentary in the Middle Ages.

Putting on the new man
In order to restore all things in Christ we must garb ourselves in grace.
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
"Put on the new man," says Blessed Apostle Saint Paul, "which has been created in justice and holiness of truth" ( Ephesians 4:24 ). The "new man" is the spiritual man, clothed in the garment of grace, as Jesus explains in His parable of the Marriage Feast. Those who do not wear the garment of grace will be cast out into the exterior darkness, "For many are called, but few are chosen" ( Blessed Apostle Saint Matthew 22:14 ).
The natural, or sensual man, knows nothing of the things of the Spirit, as Blessed Apostle Saint Paul explains: "Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the spirit that is from God, that we may know the things that have been given us by God
But the sensual man does not perceive the things that are of the Spirit of God, for it is foolishness to him and he cannot understand, because it is examined spiritually. But the spiritual man judges all things, and he himself is judged by no man. For 'who has known the mind of the Lord, that he might instruct him?' But we have the mind of Christ" (1 Corinthians 2:12,14-16).
In the world as it is, there is little justice, since everything tends to be under the control of the wealthy and the powerful, most of whom care nothing for the things of the Spirit, setting themselves up as adversaries of the Kingdom of God, as it says in the psalm: "The kings of the earth rise up, and the princes conspire together against the Lord and against his anointed
" ( Psalm 22 ).
If the country and the world around us are falling into chaos and ruin, perhaps they should. Perhaps this is God's way of tearing down what is sinful and unjust so that the Kingdom of God may reign. This must happen! Sometimes unsound structures, such as buildings and bridges that have been damaged by earthquakes, must be torn down and rebuilt. Everything built on the shifting sands of this unbelieving world will be swept away; everything built on the rock of Christ will stand.
Our Lord decrees: "Everyone therefore who hears these My words and acts upon them, shall be likened to a wise man who built his house on rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, but it did not fall, because it was founded on rock. And everyone who hears these my words and does not act upon them, shall be likened to a foolish man who built his house on sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and was utterly ruined" (Blessed Apostle Saint Matthew 7:24-27).
The same judgment must be rendered against the present illegitimate structures built upon a worldly foundation by the Conciliar Church. Before the Church can be restored to its former soundness, the heretical teachings about salvation, the false ecumenical programs, and the corrupt hierarchical structures must be swept away.
John Paul II, for example, in his determination to have everyone saved, is now calling for a review of the Church's traditional teaching that unbaptized children do not go to Heaven, but to "limbo" where they will not enjoy the Beatific Vision, but will live in a state of natural happiness. Will they be then the next to be declared saints? In this Zenit News Service report from Vatican City, note the repetitive use of the word "universal" ( italics mine ):

"After the Second Vatican Council, Catholic theology has sought answers that are in accord with the mercy of God the Father. When John Paul II received the participants in the plenary assembly of the International Theological Commission, he said: 'It (the question of unbaptized infants) is not simply an isolated theological problem
Many other fundamental topics are closely related to it: the universal salvific will of God; the unique and universal mediation of Jesus Christ; the role of the Church, universal sacrament of salvation; the theology of the sacraments; the meaning of the doctrine on original sin
It corresponds to you to scrutinize the nexus among all these mysteries to offer a theological synthesis that might serve as an aid for a more consistent and enlightened pastoral practice'" ( Oct. 7, 2004, Zenit.org ).
Blessed Apostle Saint Paul never had that same assurance of salvation for all, as he says in his letter to the Philippians: "[W]ork out your salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God Who of His good pleasure works in you both the will and the performance. Do all things without murmuring and without questioning, so as to be blameless and guileless, children of God without blemish in the midst of a depraved and perverse generation" ( Philippians 2:12-15 ).
If there is something out of control in your life - think of the seven deadly sins - grace has not yet had its proper effect. The man without the wedding garment reminds us of those who belong to the Church as the dead branches belong to the tree - lifeless branches will be pruned and thrown into the fire:

"I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he shall be cast outside as the branch and wither; and they shall gather them up and cast them into the fire, and they shall burn" ( Blessed Apostle Saint John 15:5,6).
Sometimes we are visited by misfortune, illness, problems of all kinds. Perhaps God is at work tearing down the old sinful structures in our lives so that we can be reborn through grace "in justice and holiness of truth." Must it take a lifetime to learn to be obedient to God, to learn to accept God's plan, and not to insist on our own? Let Christ be the foundation of our lives, for Blessed Apostle Saint Paul tells us: "For other foundation no one can lay, but that which has been laid, which is Christ Jesus" (1Corinthians 3:11).

"In Him we have redemption through His blood, the remission of sins, according to the riches of His grace. This grace has abounded beyond measure in us in all wisdom and prudence, so that He may make known to us the mystery of His will according to His good pleasure. And this His good pleasure He purposed in Him to be dispensed in the fullness of the times: to re-establish all things in Christ, both those in the Heavens and those on the earth" ( Ephesians 1:7-10 ).

It is truly meet and just, right and availing unto salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty and everlasting God. That on the Festival of the blessed Virgin Mary, we should praise, bless and proclaim Thee. For she conceived Thine only-begotten Son by the over-shadowing of the Holy Ghost; and losing not the glory of her virginity, gave forth to the world the everlasting light, Jesus Christ our Lord.
