Envy of our country and lifestyle by other countries is not our fault.

You miss my point. WE are the ones in the fantasy world- not the rest of the world. I don't envy Western Culture. I pity it.

Don't equate this to me praising the rest of the world, because I'm not. I just don't see us as being better off. In many ways, we're worse off because we're blind to reality.

Decades ago, those who were ‘evil’ were less inclined to act because of a more moral population.

This for example. We were not more moral decades ago. This is a myth. People always look back in a nostalgic way. They change the past around to form a sort of dichotomy to the present and as a talisman against the inevitable future. We were savages in the past. Just as brutal. Just as violent. Just as amoral. Hey, just ask the natives we supplanted on this continent. I don't think they'd share your ideas about our earlier morality.

But like I said, count me as a non-believer. I don't believe in the dream world. Violence disgusts me but it never shocks me. And when religious people do it, I am shocked least of all.

Violence and grotesque human nature don't need a religion to manifest itself. Your blame seems rather narrow and focused to me.
