I call Rick Warren "The Profit-Driven Church".

Cheers!

“The minister, Casey Treat had every one stand up and then asked those who gave 10,000 or more in the year to sit down. Then, 5000, then 1000, then 500, leaving only those standing who gave less. “

It’s a good thing Jesus never preached about the taxcollector who gave a ton to the church and the widow who gave two cents. It might confuse some of these prosperity folks.

Maybe when they see the light it will be the fires of hell.

The only disciple concerned with wealth was Judas.

Paul warned Timothy about such men in 1 Timothy 6:5, 9-11. These men of “corrupt mind” supposed godliness was a means of gain and their desire for riches was a trap that brought them “into ruin and destruction” (v. 9). The pursuit of wealth is a dangerous path for Christians and one which God warns about: “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs” (v. 10). If riches were a reasonable goal for the godly, Jesus would have pursued it. But He did not, preferring instead to have no place to lay His head (Matthew 8:20) and teaching His disciples to do the same.

Coincidence Alert!

Just found this quote:

Let us not esteem worldly prosperity or adversity as things real or of any moment, but let us live elsewhere, and raise all our attention to Heaven; esteeming sin as the only true evil, and nothing truly good, but virtue which unites us to God.

-- St Gregory Nazianzen

I have no idea why some believe it. Yes there can be wealthy well to do Christians. There can also be dirt poor ones whom for whatever reason including purposes for the Kingdom of Heaven. The Disciples were never rich. Few had that many worldly goods. Paul is another example. An Apostle who worked as a tent maker.

A Christians true riches are not of this world for this world shall perish and the riches with it. I don't believe a person must give away all they have to enter the Kingdom of Heaven unless the LORD Himself places it on their heart to do so and that is a very different matter all together. I don't believe a rich man can buy giving away all his money or parts of it buy his way into heaven. That purchase was made by Christ. It is wise though if you have the means to give plenty of your wealth to give it but give it wisely.

The same sects also seem to be if you but have the faith you shall be healed no matter what. If you don't where was thy faith brother? Another doctrine not Biblical sound. Paul asked to be healed of his affliction. Afflictions which seem bad to us are GOD's tempering tool He uses in making us depend upon Him and build our character. Adversity + GOD = Growth in Spirit. The best example off the top of my head to show this is true is a woman named Joni Tada. Her accomplishments through her faith and GOD's Grace & power has been a miracle all in itself.

Prosperity Gospel teachings needlessly set people up for a huge fall and a huge amount of guilt that will come with it. True Prosperity to Christians can not be measured in worldly wealth even though it is not a sin to have earthly wealth. The Devil himself could take a mans last dime in that very hour. Luke ch 12 v 16-21 shows what can happen with earthly riches minus a relationship with GOD. Matthew ch 6 v 19-21 tells us what treasures we should seek above all others.

Stay away from Rick Warren. Our previous pastor made all our small home groups do a study of this book, in support of RW. Then he started with other writers...and the list went on. Finally, the church voted to send him away! Thank heavens. It made you feel that if you didn’t agree with RW and the other writers, the pastor thought you were biblically inept or scripturally wrong.

RW has some explaining to do in his conduct in a lot of arenas and his unequivicable support of Obama.

Good Grief — Eliot Spitzer’s call girls made more than that in one night — cash on the barrelhead.

In its American incarnation, the prosperity Gospel probably began with the theological speculations of the evangelist Oral Roberts

Nope. It actually has older roots, according to my reading. And the tree has some surprising branches. Rob't "Self Esteem" Schuller, for one.

I can’t even imagine thinking of Jesus living a prosperity lifestyle.

< sarcasm>OH! But don't you know Jesus was rich!< /sarcasm> And (to drag in a mostly unrelated oddity) < sarcasm>Jesus' stepdad or rich uncle was Joseph of Arimathea! Tin mines in Britain!< /sarcasm>

He may have dined with friends, but he had not fancy house to call his home or rich garments to wear.

"Foxes have lairs and birds of the air have their nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."

Temporally, anything that keeps the money flowing to the hucksters will keep this going. Eternally, the Devil hides the true Jesus (who "emptied himself" and came to die) with a false one.

Does that mean all the poor people of Asia and Africa don’t know God?

My understanding is that the prosperity so-called gospel is huge in Africa.

I also wonder about Rick Warren and his book “The Purpose Driven Life.” Hmmmm. Haven’t read it so I really can’t speak to it.

The links go like this: Warren to Robert Schuller. Schuller to Norman Vincent Peale ("Power of Positive Thinking" -- sound suggestive?). Peale to Ernest Holmes who was a devotee of New Thought and founder of the Religious Science cult. These are documentable links of influence, not necessarily master-disciple links. And, of course, stuff trees off from these.

Skip Warren's book unless you have to read it to research something. It ain't worth it.

Yeah, when I pray to God for someone for healing, I know that it may not necessarily be PHYSICAL healing that is received, but there will be healing, nonetheless.

There is no honor in being poor.

That is a Satanic statement.

The following is God's Word:

"For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? But ye have despised the poor."

**There is no honor in being poor.**

That’s strange. Mother Teresa of Calcutta saw the face of Jesus in everyone she ministered to — the sick in the gutter, the dying, the plague ridden in doorways, the maggot covered children — she still saw Jesus Christ in them.

I think you are badly misled in your observations.

Yeah, I don’t buy prosperity gospel. It’s like if we’re good, we’ll get stuff? No, that’s not why I believe. I give thanks whether I am doing well or not but I don’t pray for stuff or success.
