Some really do miss the point....others grasp it entirely.

I'm not Baptist but as for drinking....there are many scriptures opposing drunkenness:

“Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise” Prv. 20:1

‘Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? Those who linger over wine, who go to sample bowls of mixes wine......” Do not gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly! In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper. Your eyes will see strange sights and your mind imagine confusing things.....” Prv.23:29-33

“Do not join with those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor and drowsiness clothes them like rags.” Prv.23:20,21

It does appear moderation is key, however one prone to drinking too much.... if is not of faith it is sin for them. Mel Gibson comes to mind and those like him. There loses increase over time.

Already we have dodging and equivocating and refusing to engage the direct question - (Post 16 in response to post 15.) Now that the rabbit has been chased, how about rereading 15 and replying to it?

I understand that, and in fact the Catholic church considers getting drunk to be gravely sinful.

OTOH, I live in the city where the Southern Baptist Convention has its headquarters. I know for a fact that, up until a few years ago, a person employed by their publishing house who was caught having a drink (that's ONE drink) -- outside working hours, on his time, on his own nickel, even if it was just a beer while having supper with his wife in a restaurant -- was subject to immediate dismissal from his job, even if he wasn't a Baptist!. (I know that from people who worked there.)

You want to talk to me about arbitrary, man-made rules and traditions imposed without Biblical authority?

And don't get me started about the Pentecostal groups that won't let women cut their hair and other such goofy nonsense.

My point was that there's NO shortage whatsoever of man-made rules and traditions in the Protestant camp.
