Pope Should Resign, Says Chairman of Belgian Bishops' Investigating Commission

The psychologist who headed an independent commission investigating sex-abuse charges for the Belgian bishops has said that Pope Benedict XVI should resign to “set an example” of accountability in the Church.

Peter Adriaenssens told the daily De Morgen that the Pope “should not content himself with just expressing regret.” It would be better, he said, if the Pope took dramatic action to show that “one person is taking responsibility.”

Noting that the sex-abuse crisis has been a worldwide problem, Adriaenssens reasoned that the Pope should accept ultimate responsibility for the problem.

Adriaenssens and the other members of the Belgian investigating commission, which had been created by the Belgian bishops, resigned after a police raid in which all their confidential files were seized by prosecutors. After a court decision requiring authorities to return the files, the commission presented its final report on September 10, disclosing that almost 500 people had reported abuse by Catholic priests in Belgium.

KEYWORDS:
The Pope should take the rap for men who've made a career out of defying him and Catholic discipline? The Pope should resign for abuse which was at its height when he was a university professor in Germany and then Archbishop of Munich? The Pope should resign because homosexuals have run amok and the likes of rogues such as Weakland, Daneels, Mahony et al., are going to skate?

Rational debate has become almost impossible on this issue. Any suggestion that this is a homosexual problem, that seminaries need to carefully screen out such men and that bishops and seminary rectors have wrought havoc brings screams of "homophobia" and "it's the Pope's fault".

Adriaenssens reasoned that the Pope is someone all queers should be afraid of, therefore the Pope should resign and take the stress off their necks.

I guess Mr. Adreianssens hasn’t spent much time reading about Cardinal Josef Ratzinger, and what he did to warn Bishops about the sexual abuse problems that were looming in their countries.

"Strike the Shepherd, scatter the sheep."... were the Pope to resign, we would lose one of the most capable and competent Bishops to lead us out of this.

Peter Adriaenssens should resign, because he has chosen to align himself with the other side.

I pray that he has come to this conclusion out out of ignorance and not malice, and that he will quickly be corrected of his erroneous reasoning.

Rational debate has become almost impossible on this issue. Any suggestion that this is a homosexual problem, that seminaries need to carefully screen out such men and that bishops and seminary rectors have wrought havoc brings screams of "homophobia" and "it's the Pope's fault".

This means that the Physician has found part of the disease, and needs to keep cutting, no matter how loud the screams become.

The psychologist who headed an independent commission

The psychologist??? LOL (is there a way to represent a bitter laugh?)! Seems I recall that psychologists played a major role in the spread of the scandalous behavior, with their assurances that they could "cure" it and their actual programs that at least one researcher described as more "a training program for sexual abuse".

You are correct.

Remember the continual calls for John Paul II to quit towards the end of his pontificate, supposedly because of his health? Calling for the Pope's resignation seems to have become a popular pastime.

Europe wants rid of the Pope and the Catholic Church. I fully believe that chasing the Pope out of Rome and the sacking of the Vatican is a necessary prerequisite for the Islamic takeover of this rabble.

By the same logic Churchill should have resigned after Dunkirk.
