Gibbons Cried (National Catholic Fishwrap waaaah alert)
National Catholic Fishwrap ^ | 10/20/2010 | Michael Sean Winters

It is said that when, in 1911, James Cardinal Gibbons learned that Archbishop William Henry O'Connell was named a cardinal, Gibbons cried. O'Connell was refered to at the time, by a woman who worked at the Vatican, Ella Edes, as "Monsignor Pomposity." He was most known for his efforts to have the U.S. Bishops Conference disbanded and his opposition to laws against child labor.

Today, Archbishop Raymond Burke of the Apostolic Signatura, was named a cardinal. In heaven, I am sure that Gibbons is weeping anew.

Can we use the word schmuck in the religion forum, if so I think Michael Sean Winters is a schmuck.

If we can’t use the word schmuck in reference to Michael Sean Winters then I won’t call him a schmuck. I’ll call him a moron... but I’ll think the word schmuck very loudly.

Good grief what a schmuck.

Know who is really crying because Abp Burke was named a cardinal? Michael Sean Winters, that’s who. I’ll bet the rest of the fishwrappers are none too thrilled either. Schmucks.

I know that this awarding of the cardinal's hat in no way reflects an endorsement of Burke's views, but many of his fans will interpret it that way and I do not think it a good thing to encourage them.
Burke is a very good man. I heard about this today and realized that Pope Benedict and Burke are on the same theological wavelength (the true one). Hee, indeed! By the by, I didn't know that NCFishwrap still had enough subscribers to have a circulation. The old "spirit of V-II" hippie crowd has about died off...

mark, I agree. I had to comment, over there:
Seriously? Archbishop Burke is following Church teachings. As we all should be. I mean this sincerely, we should all celebrate when new Cardinals are chosen. God has given us so much, in this One True Church. Whether you dislike him from a political point of view, or don’t care for his taste in shoes, remember what is most important: the Church continues to give Our Lord’s message of Love for all of us. THAT is the important part here, not kerfluffling over someone you don’t care for, becoming a Cardinal. We should all, every Catholic, everywhere, revel in this Divine Gift.

Thanks, Legatus. I’ve a got picture of a goofy-looking individual in a poorly-fitting stuper-hero costume, with Michael Sean Winters’ head on it, and big, baby-with-the-flu-green S on the sickly chest. lol.
