She/He is not being idolatrous. She/He is merely asking St. Jude to pray for her.

Have you ever asked anyone to pray for you?

Catholics believe that the Saints in heaven can intercede — ask Christ — to answer our prayer.

Did not the Blessed Virgin Mary intercede for the couple who ran out of wine at the Wedding of Cana?

What is wrong with interceding for someone?

Answer: Nothing at all.

St Jude is dead. You can't ask the dead to pray for you. Only Jesus can intercede for us. There is a chasm between the living and the dead (Luke 16:19-31).
